Greatest DCA Corps of All Time

Recommended Posts

Chris...Highest budget and most paid performers may (or may not) fit in this subject.

I think that the 1997 Brigs was also pretty special. That was the first time they won, and learned to win with class. We did that with average drum corps guys. No hot shots, no specialists... I also think that 1991 Empire, and 1994 Empire....I am sure that there are many Cabs that would pick their years for their argument ('95 and '96 come to mind easily) '93 Bushwackwers not too shabby. The list can go on. But watch out when you start talking the Brigs of DC's tenure at director. You may get fired on...justifyably. My brothers will be mad at me for saying this, but the talent pool was not just and fair.

I think Glen came up with a pretty cool way to do this, and I agree with Cabs first, Empire second.

Kay,

The answer to your question is... absolutely. The truth is usually something people don't want to hear.

Hehe :-)

Don't respond... it isn't important. I'm not going to argue... Cabs are great, bell bottom, silk shirts, sombreros and all... Back to your regularly schedule DCA banter.

I'm not looking to argue either, but don't EVER tell me not to respond. I never even mentioned Cabs.........I never even said that 2002 may not have been the greatest show ever, I did SAY that your theory and presentation were wrong for the confines of this thread.

Your OPINION is not now, nor will ever be the TRUTH and that maybe hard for YOU to hear.

i'm just sitting here wondering why a thread about the inclusive history, not just one solitary season, is being hijacked.

Again, we are seeing that, since the word "corps" is both singular and plural, the way an OP chooses to word his/her thread title lets others interpret however they wish, even if it is indeed quite different that he/she intended.

From a "pure numbers" objective perspective, this "all-time" ranking is on the money.

But from an "impact on the activity" perspective...which of course is more subjective.... I think the ranking would look different.

well then,............sounds like you've got some work to do!................

Creating a formula, as I suggested earlier, is a pretty subjective process in this type of analysis. How does one weight the various factors? So, I quick worked out a short one, based upon years attending DCA, # of times placing in Top 10, # of titles, and average number of corps each corps beat each year. Surprisingly, Cru came out ahead of ES and Bush, which got me to noticing how that kind of analysis weights toward longevity. (Cru having been in many more DCAs than ES or Bush.)

But, as for my suggestion that avg # of corps beaten rather than average placing might be more valuable, try the following list on for size. (Truncated to corps that attended DCA 7 or more times, or at least 5 consecutive years.)

Cabs (14.1)

Empire Statesmen (14.0)

Renegades (13.9)

Bushwackers (13.5)

Bucs (12.4)

Brigs (11.7)

Hurcs (10.8)

Sun (10.6)

Sky (10.2)

Corps Vets (9.9)

Cru (9.6)

SCA (9.6)

MBI (9.5)

Matadors (9.3)

Yankee Rebels (9.0)

Carolina Gold (8.2)

Westshoremen (7.7)

Kilties (7.1)

Govenaires (7.0)

Erie T-birds (6.4)

Grennies (6.3)

Kingsmen (5.8)

Les Diplomates (5.8)

Guelph Royalaires (4.9)

PittsburghRockets (3.6)

Hanover Lancers (3.0)

Chicago Vanguard (3.0)

Bonnie Scots (3.0)

Boys/Spirit of 76 (2.9)

OH Brass Factory (2.8)

Heat Wave (2.8)

Capitol Brass (2.0)

Chieftains (1.6)

Gulf Coast Sound (1.6)

Milton Keystoners (0.8)

Could I tempt you into more time consuming self torture to figure in caption wins... no wait give points for 1st and also 2nd and 3rd in perc, brass, M&M, guard captions.

Stats are fun, it brings out the competitive nature. I most like to see how the certain old corps fare over time Bucs, Hurcs, Crusaders, Sunrisers, Skyliners... etc its still weird to me that the top 5 arent forever Bucs, Hurcs, Sun, Cabs, Sky having started witnessing senior corps at one year old in 1964. Still miss Matadors, Yankee Rebels. Still amazed by Brigs incredible comeback from inactivity. Got out of the loop due to work and geography in the 90s and missed alot. Still waiting for the Crusaders to win one someday, For Hurcs to win again, for MBI to finally take it West. Funny things stand out looking back over 40 years of drum corps... like Hanover Lancers rifle line in 1980 I think it was... YRs playing Mongonucleosis in '76, Crusaders hornline in '77, Skyliners victory concert in Hershey in '78 (I stood in the middle of it)... retreats, trooping the stands... scores other than when Sun edged Cabs in '77, I dont remember the scores.
