Strangest Place You Ever Played A Standstill

Recommended Posts

Many years ago the Rochester Crusaders did a " half time show " for the Super Bowl inside of a bar. I believe the bar name was Red Creek.

ROCHESTER CRUSADERS PLAYED AT "TOP OF THE PLAZA" RESTAURANT IN ROCHESTER NY--PLAYED SON OF A PREACHER MAN WITH ED COZZOLINO, PLAYED AT SPECIAL OLYMPICS FOR ABC NEWS IN BROCKPORT, NY--ALSO PLAYED GRAND OPENING FOR A DISCO IN SUBURBS OF ROCHESTER IN A PARKING LOT--WE GOT FREE DRINKS!!!!!! VINCE BRUNI HAD A KNACK FOR FINDING UNUSUAL PLACES FOR US TO PLAY. BUT WE HAD FUN!!!

In the eighties... Mardi Gras in New Orleans, ... 4 guys from Noble Callahan made the trip to perform with Empire Statesmen.

Among many performances there, we went to the French Quarter and set up on the street, to play. A couple of tunes in, the crowd was so thick and close, that we couldn't even see Dave Bruni, out front.

What we didn't know, was that, at the other end of the corps, the police were threatening the drum line with arrest, FOR INCITING A RIOT!

Same Mardi Gras trip.....

after one of the parades we did, we were invited to perform a private exhibition for one of those Mardi Gras Men's Clubs, in a conference room inside the Superdome!

Also same trip....

Vince had several parades booked for us, but on the first night we were free.... so for practice...

...we took our bus downtown, where a parade was scheduled... found an alley, cross street, close to the reviewing stand.

We assembled in the alley and watched the parade go by. Then, when an opening in the line of march appeared....WE JUMPED IN AND PLAYED PAST THE REVIEING STAND... then exited onto another side street!

It was only later that we fouind out about the $200 fine, per man, for illegal parading!

Ya can't make this stuff up!!!!

The opening of a Dollar General which was to be the developement anchor for a drug infested area. That afternoon a police officer who escorted us was shot in the hand busting a drug deal in that same block.Luckily not one of our members who was in law enforcement. To this day I wonder if when our indoor drumline played exhibitions in 2006, that some members who were off duty law enforcement, that nobody knew they had their weapons under their uniforms when performing. The police van we used as a equipment truck should have tipped them off, except the one poor sapp that walked up to practice smoking a joint. That was funny!

Not a standstill. More of a sitstill really:

In 2002 at championships we got to the stadium and the rain decided to fall. We didn't feel like wandering off down the hill at Lackawanna in the rain to warm up so the hornline sat on the bus and ran through a couple of our show songs. Gathered a reasonable sized crowd outside of the bus so it kinda felt like a performance...

Not quite a standstill, but not quite a parade either. We did a "parade" for the "Grand opening of the town of Harmony, and Summer Festival Doo dah."

The "parade" route was all of 1 block long! At the end of the route, we turned around, and did the whole parade again. It must have been a big deal though,

the MC was Bob Barker.

I can remember when I was with Kiwanis Kavaliers (probably 1994-5ish) we used to do the DCM (Drum Corps Midwest) tour. This tour was usually near the beginning of the season and so on July 4th we would do probably 4-5 parades in the Chicago area. One of the parades was to go through a local fair. At the end of the fair we did a stand still concert, which was normal as you might imagine. But this one was probably the most fun of all the concerts we did. We actually got to do the concert on the TILT-A-WHIRL. Obviously the ride wasn't running but we used the ride as a stage and the corps do the arc around the outside of the Tilt-A-Whirl with the drumline in the middle and the pit set up in the front. I can remember thinking how crazy this was and wondering if anyone would be crazy enough to start 'er up!

Was thinking of putting this in Toms thread but don't want to take away from the people who actually marched in the wierd, crazy and just plain sucky places. This one is for the standstill concerts.

This reply is regarding a "just plain sucky" place. Year 1966 - venue was the horse festival in Busti, NY. Busti is a small town south and west of Jamestown NY. The thing I remember most was that everything smelled like horse pucky and everyplace we walked seemed to be covered with horse pucky. The corps I was with (Northeast Shoreliners) wore - you guessed it - white shoes.

Another stray memory jogged that was not a wierd standstill but hey... it's my thread.

RCA show in middle of nowhere known as Northern PA. We leave the stadium after the show and march to the buses that for some reason are now about a half mile away. End up marching thru the middle of a freaking town carnival that was set up in a field behind the stadium. Typical portible carnival rides with the typical carnies hanging out. And of course we're going down the main drag dirt path in block formation making people move out of the way. Think we beat the local favorites which "urinated" people off even more.
