Kamarag
Or gouging the few that can afford to pay $100 for dvds, at the expense of a ton of potential exposure. DCI isn't "gouging" anyone. When you buy the DVD, you're not just paying for the cost of the materials. You're paying for the cost to produce them, which includes a professional production crew, equipment, mastering, and production. When you do that at the numbers DCI does, which is not at a large production run level like, say, a Hollywood movie, but also not at the small run level like when you make ten DVDs for your buddies, the cost is ENORMOUS. The DCI DVDs are the giant cash-cow many fans think they are. The fact that DCI is able to sell the lower-tier corps DVDs are a discounted price is a good thing, especially considering that they probably sell a fraction of that disc compared to the Top 12. Lowering the price to gain more "exposure" would be a bad thing, especially considering the DVDs are purchased by fans, not the uninitiated. glory
Or gouging the few that can afford to pay $100 for dvds, at the expense of a ton of potential exposure. Exposure matters not at all if there are no corps to appear. Tickets and DVDs are important sources of funds for the corps and the activity to operate. For DCI to leave money on the table would be stupid, which it's not. HH

I severely doubt the cost is at the level where they need to be charging $100 for the dvds to make a profit. Especially when the quality has gone down on the dvd in terms of features offered (meaning less cost on the production). Its a 2 dvd set. There is no way its THAT expensive that it needs to be $50 a dvd. Ive never really found the quality to be that special even before the reduction in features recently (how many times has something huge been left out or the video focused on some random pit member while the corps is pulling off some sweet drill move in the background). Hell, id probably be ok with a high cam only dvd (no editing cost), with the normal audio (and we all know what that part costs already) The DCI DVDs are the giant cash-cow many fans think they are. The fact that DCI is able to sell the lower-tier corps DVDs are a discounted price is a good thing, especially considering that they probably sell a fraction of that disc compared to the Top 12. so are they losing money on these, since you contend it costs SOOOO much to produce the top 12. Lowering the price to gain more "exposure" would be a bad thing, especially considering the DVDs are purchased by fans, not the uninitiated. Disagree. A lot of fans dont buy dvds because its just too expensive. Additionally, a lot of fans pool money and then burn copies of these dvds for the group. From a poll here awhile back on DCP, the biggest groups of fans were the 16-24 group and the 40-50 group. Mainly, marching members and recently aged out alums, and parents and those who were getting back into the activity. With the $100 price, they alienate one of those groups entirely. On the other hand, I bet a lot of the 16-24 group can acquire the DVDs from Santa.
corps-mudgeon
maybe. On the other hand, I bet a lot of the 16-24 group can acquire the DVDs from Santa. Santa's elves make them for free, so once again, no profit for DCI.
fourouttheforty
It's stupid to charge that much when you know the price will drop in a couple years and in the mean time you can watch videos from your marching members friends who are illegal distributing their own performances. Imo, that is, I guess some people just can't wait.
garfield
So, let's review a little. Just today I finished listening to 1990 finals on CD. I, again, enjoyed almost every bit of it - especially the memory of SCV playing the final chord of Carmen from the tunnel. It was less expensive back then, and they didn't have DVDs, although I've watched those shows many, many times on VHS. Let's assume I paid $100 even back then. This is 29 YEARS later. My expense worked out to $3 PER YEAR. Is it so expensive to relive all those wonderful moments? I don't think so. I wish all you complainers would get real. Your purchase helps the activity which helps kids experience what DC really means. Come on. In this age of $4 cups of coffee is $3 per year really such a bite? garfield
Oops, bad math (and good wine). It's 19 years so the math works out to $5 per year. Such a difference! Big deal. Be active. Pay up. Support the activity.

What if the cost of those extras were basically subsidized before they dropped them due to financial pressures? I am sure Tom Blair isn't donating services and equipment.
