Jumping into Bayonne harbor and getting covered in a filmy substance and remaining unharmed! Able to fly with the assistance of a skateboard and Donnie Sweger's Mercury Lynx! Look! Down on the field! Is it a Drummer, is it a Drum? No, it was Superman! Posing as not so mild-mannered Rickie-Lee the Tymp player for the Westshoremen, Superman fights a never ending battle for.... umm.... Only he really knows....

Anyhow, Superman had a special Superman cape with the Superman logo and that little green round cartoony guy flipping you off that Boom Boom helped him iron on.

At Gloversville, he appeared wearing gym shorts, the cape, and nothing else at the top of the stands on Side 1. Mind you, there was a steep dirt path down the side of the hill besides those stands. He struck his pose at the top of the hill, and it was also kind of muddy, it was sort of raining a tad, whatever, it was really slick down the hill on that path.

Two or three dozen Westhoremen lined the sides of the path going down the hill at Superman's behest, and we had to sing the John Williams Superman theme really loud for him several times while he acted like Evel Kneivel preparing to jump the Snake River Canyon, but Superman was preparing to take a flying head-first leap down this hill and belly-slide down this path.... which he eventually did.

Needless to say, it attracted a lot of attention, and was pretty well recieived, and there were demands he do this yet again to please the crowd. I mean, it only lasted a few seconds, and it was pretty entertaining. I'd say it was likely more entertaining than that Little Geoffrey guy at Cadets this year seemed to have been. I know Sky, and some of the Sunrisers were watching this too, and they wanted to see this again. Superman chickened out and started his 'pretend to start to jump and actually not do it' act, and needless to say, certain corps members from Sky and or Sun wanted to see Superman belly-flop head-first down that steep path again, period. They were not gonna put up with any of his shenanigans, they wanted to see a SHOW. So, they went after him. All I know is I remember Superman tearing out, his red cape flying behind him into the night and the stadium parking lot to escape like 6-10 angry Sky and or Sunriser members, who were running at a pretty fast and somewhat beered-up clip themselves.

I clearly remember one of them in a NY Metro accent yelling rather loudly whether anyone had seen "That (colorful metaphor)ing (term used by people in the Netherlands for a big wall that holds back water) so that we can catch him and throw him down the (colorful metaphor)ing hill again!!!!!!!!!"

NO one could find him, and I know if any of US had found him, we'd have turned his red-caped hinder over to Sky and let them throw him down the hill again. I think he ran onto the Ogre bus and somehow managed to completely hide in there until the bus pulled out, maybe up in the luggage shelves or in the loo.

And THAT, is the story of Superman at Gloversville, NY. Take note Tom Peashey, this is what happens when you have a contest with no retreat and no entertainment after the competing corps, and the tabulator is slow. You get Superman jumping down hillsides instead.... :hmmm:

i believe that show goes back to the early 70's. we won it in 72. after that it get's way to blurry.

The show goes back at least to the late 60's when it was a junior show. I played there in 1968. The stadium is a neat performance venue located in a basin with the stands up on the hillside.

Just found this thread! Anyway...I say that about 99% of this story is accurate, but I seem to remember that in the very beginning, Superman used a tattered "Budweiser" beach towel as his cape...the actual cape came very soon after....but yeah...I remember this incident, and the Skyliners as his arch nemesis'!

Ditto... just found the thread as well. Interesting account but about 50% correct.

1. Superman was sitting at the top of the hill with the rest of corp with Red Shorts and a budwiser beach towel around his back because of being sunburned at practice that day.

2. The corp looked up and decided to start singing the superman theme... hmmmmmm and of course he dove down the hill.

3. Afterwards he went back to the top and Sky (not Sun) wanted him to dive again but he would have nothing to do with it (and yes this started the love affair)

4. He took off Running hurdling a pretty high fence (can't remember how high) with a ton of sky members in pursuite

5. He made it to the other side of the stadium when a number of cabs caught up to him right as Sky was closing in.

6. The Cabs stated to the Sky members that if you want him you come through us. I don't know if anyone remembers the Sky / Cabs love affair back in those days.

7. The Cabs escorted him back to his corp where interestingly enough a local college coach was standing and offered him a spot on the team... hmmm he did love football

8. After than the love afair between Sky and Superman continued for the next couple of years with all of them eventually building a really great friendship

PS... now if only he had half the energy he had back in those days. :)

The reason I knew only 50% was because no one from the corps saw you after you ran off at Warp Factor 9. Your escape and subsequent rescue by the Cabs is pretty cool. You ran so fast we never had a chance to figure out WTH happened until we found out you were on the bus!

Band kids don't know what they're missing, do they?
