jjeffeory
Thank you for adding absolutely nothing to this thread. Of course it added to this thread. It's okay to voice opinion, but it is all in the delivery, as they say... Some people call it how they see it instead of hype on things simply because they're being Pollyanna. That being said, I like John Mackey fine.
Kyle B
For instance, nobody should ever instruct a musician to play past the point of good tone quality I'm going to disagree with you there. If that's the sound the composer wants, then that's what he is going to instruct the players to do. How many times in drum corps have we heard a mellophone section stretching the line of good tone quality so we can hear that sound rip through the line. It's not always a good thing, especially when it is just 1 player doing it on his own, but I'm sure sometimes it is asked for them to do so. DonPRBari
I listened to it and thought it was m'kay.
Kyle B
Is it my favorite piece ever? No I think it has a lot of really good parts tho.
BRASSO
John Mackey is a terrible composer. You'd have been better off saying so and so " is a terrible quarterback ". You call somebody" terrible " in Music, DCI, etc. on DCP and you instantly become the anti- christ here. ( haha!) AZFan
You're an armchair critic. I'm writing you off until I hear a superiorly composed piece of YOURS.Seriously though...I'm certainly not saying John Mackey is the best thing since sliced bread, but your comments IMO are just ridiculous. I think you just don't like him, and the fact that you've met him supports that conclusion. By no means am I a good ballet dancer. I took a couple classes last spring with my friend because she didn't want to be there without anyone she knew. When i danced, i wasn't able to keep my balance very well when i went up onto my toes, and i had very limited flexibility. My only redeeming quality was that my toes were pointed "fantastically." Since then, this same friend has taken me to see ballets when they come through town and i had an appreciation for their craft. There was one girl (and i say girl because they were about 12 or 13) who stuck out in my mind as i was watching the show. She was a terrible dancer because she couldn't keep her legs straight and her toes were seldom pointed. My friend commented on the same things and helped me understand a little bit more ballet technique. So in short, i hate when people say well lets see what you've done better. Just because i'm not a hotshot dancer doesn't mean i don't know when someone else isn't either. And just because i'm not a hotshot composer doesn't mean i don't know when someone else isn't either. Matt_S
You're an armchair critic. I'm writing you off until I hear a superiorly composed piece of YOURS. That's the laziest rebuttal ever. I haven't heard anything that you've composed, superior or otherwise, so should I write you off when you saw you like the music? Because the quarterback analogy has already been made, I'll play along. I've only ever played catch with a football. I've played some QB in pick-up games, but I've never quarterbacked for an organized team in my life. I can still tell you quite convincingly that Ryan Leaf was a terrible NFL quarterback. bawker
I can still tell you quite convincingly that Ryan Leaf was a terrible NFL quarterback. He is, however, an excellent felon.
joegray
John Mackey is a terrible composer. This post is just not very well thought out. I don't particularly care for Mackey's music, but a lot of people do... The fact that you can't find value in his music doesn't make him a bad composer. For you to make a statement claiming he is a terrible composer because you can't find value in his music makes it appear that you have quite an enlarged self-image. Next time, perhaps you should just say "I don't care for his music". As far as the original question, I think a few corps will probably jump on the piece and do fine arrangements. His music sees to tansfer well to the field.
