Piper
I enjoy ballads, but I miss the brass soloists the most in any corps' show. I've watched and heard some great ones over the years, and they could make your night if you were in the stands, or break your heart if you were in another corps. John Bogenschutz
As a music arranger it is not rare for band directors to ask me for shorter and shorter ballads each year. Some of which have completely eliminated them altogether from show design upon request. I'm with most everyone on here though- I do enjoy a good ballad, especially the 90's Cadets type ballads. mingusmonk
They're becoming more and more rare. Makes me sad. Listen to more Bluecoats and get happy. I get you though, and I agree.
Kyle B
Anyone who really enjoys a ballad should come to Pennsylvania on Saturday
wallace
Cadets, Crown, and Troopers had ballads. Glassmen performed Tristan and Yvaine. Edited May 5, 2010 by wallace
BRASSO
I enjoy ballads, but I miss the brass soloists the most in any corps' show. I've watched and heard some great ones over the years, and they could make your night if you were in the stands, or break your heart if you were in another corps. DCI Corps still go with some brass soloists , but not as many trumpet soloists as they used too. There are more solo dancers now than trumpet soloists. This is understandable, as today's judging captions reward the visual solo over the trumpet solo. Corps deal with the hand they're given. As for ballads, some of the best ballads I 've heard have been within the last decade ( not so much last year though ) Edited May 5, 2010 by BRASSO
Jeff Ream
ballads are definitely getting shorter, used as a transition into a power ending. here's hoping, like chop and bop, it's a phase

Iplaytimpani
Here's to you "Dancer in the Dark" Sure I'm biased, but I've always enjoyed Glassmen's ballads. Especially the past two years, with Watermark/Send in the Clowns and Tristan last year. Usually a highlight of the show for me.
MikeN
While corps still use them, they are indeed getting shorter and shorter, I feel. As corps use more and more transition-type material in their programs, it's difficult to find *any* mood / tempo sustained over an extended period. I'm not saying it's good or bad, but I think that's where we're at right now. Mike
