DCI story on CNN.com

Interesting to find that, according to corpsreps, they never have played it.

Not true. Phantom Regiment played their namesake song as their opener in 1960, 1961, 1962 and 1969, and mixed a brief chunk of it into their field show music for the following three years. It has also been in the corps' repertoire for use as a parade, field warmup and/or encore tune in many years since.

If the G7 does split from DCI and forms its own circuit-- and presumably adopts all the changes Hopkins wants (most notably woodwinds)-- will those seven corps continue to attract the cream-of-the-crop type talent they get now? Will the best high school and college performers want to join a corps where you only compete against six other super corps -- which at that point would be 100% marching bands? Over the decades, the fact that drum corps was different than marching band was always part of its attraction for many kids.

A historical question: why were woodwinds never a part of drum & bugle corps, but a part of marching bands?

Because drum corps and marching band are different entities.

Marching band is exactly what the name says it is....taking a "band", often a pre-existing entity that ordinarily performs sitting still, and teaching it to march. The instrumentation of a concert band is not all effective for use outdoors and/or on the move....sometimes this results in changes to the equipment (switching bassoon or bari sax players to more portable instruments) or modified instruments (bell-front French horns), and sometimes the band just works with what they have so that their members can continue performing with their chosen instruments.

Drum and bugle corps was developed by taking the equipment that the military found most effective as field signaling devices (drums, bugles, flags) and using them for parades and field performances. Since they were looking to perform primarily outdoors, those selections made sense.

It is worth noting that the veterans' organizations included both drum corps and marching bands in their organized contests from the beginning (early 1920s). Some VFW and AL posts had established marching bands, while others developed drum & bugle corps. Seems like most people aren't aware of this, because the drum corps were so much more popular than the marching bands....but they co-existed in VFW, AL and several other competitive circuits for decades.

If people don't like the direction the country is headed in they have the option to vote their representatives in or out of office, but the DCI BoD is more like a set of collective dictators.

Why would they march woodwinds? wouldn't they just be added to the pit?

CNN hasn't caught on that a DCI fan hacked it's site.

Had to laugh at the count of Drum Corps left in the country. Know it's really the DCI corps count but figured the All-Age/Alumni-type/Minis got missed cuz they didn't make enough "trouble" to get noticed.

Happy Happy Jim!!

(Sorry, couldn't resist...LOL)

of course it makes sense. It is EXACTLY what happened in 1972 that led to the birth of DCI.

A group of corps got fed up with the way the VFW ran corps competitions and they broke off and started DCI.

It amazes me that DCI cant see that they have now become the VFW and history is on the verge of repeating itself.

And we saw what happened to the VFW run competitions after DCI broke away.

Seriously, do we have enough Jr corps for two seperate circuits? How many would go to Finals with a quarter or so less corps?
