Bando/n00b Stories

Recommended Posts

Stopped here. Still about 2 1/2 pages I didn't even care to read because of this.

1) 99.9999999% of DCI marchers had their start in a High School/College band of sorts. Gotta start somewhere, so why make fun of those just hopping in? We should WELCOME those new to the activity, not think ourselves above them for what we know.

2) I openly welcome people calling us a "band". My grandparents STILL say my corps is "the best band out there" and I smile and tell them thank you. Same with family friends. Why correct them when a "band minus woodwinds and trombones" is what we are?

3) If the topic is on pet peeves of DCI, mine would be the following:

Seriously. Get some experience under your belt, eat some of that "humble pie" crap, and realize that not everyone knows everything. Let it be...

Lighten up, Francis.

Define bando. Someone who's only marched band and not corps? If they don't act all googly eyed at a corps or say stupid things arey they still bando? Can someone who's marched corps still be considered bando if they still act like a DB after marching corps? Is a 65 year old person at their first drum corps show who doesn't get why everyone is "booing" Bluecoats, or calls a corps a band a bando?

In my corps a "bando" was basically someone a corps member used to feel better about themselves. Quite the annoying term.

I'll share a story:

Who: About 1/2 of my high school drumline.

When: The fall of '81.

Where: Terre Haute, IN - Indiana State Championships

Set-up: At that time, Phantom Regiment sold their Corps jackets to the public. Some of you will remember those black nylon jackets with the white lettering. If I remember correctly, 5 of us in the drumline bought them. We ALWAYS wore them to our competitions. It was part of our hype and we thought it was funny when the other bands drummers gawked at us when we got off the buses.

Busted!!!: We arrive and head to the bathrooms (wearing the PR jackets of course) before we need to change to perform. This guy asks us "When did YOU march?". I look this guy straight in the eye and reply "This summer.". He responds "Funny, I don't remember seeing you on tour." I say "Funny, I don't remember seeing you either." He says "Well that would be impossible as I WAS DRUM MAJOR THIS YEAR!!!" Well, what do I say to that??? We RAN out of there and all the way back to the buses. I was just thankful I didn't get my ### kicked for being a pretender...

So that's my TRUE story.

I know a guy who marched soprano for Phantom and he told the story that when they were asked by girls that saw them in their civilian clothes what they played that they would calmly look around to make sure nobody else was around and then tell the girls "snare."

In addition to likewise hating people who use "their" incorrectly....I really hate it when peeple spell incorrectly.

How about when someone spells "people" wrong?

Not really a bando story, but on my very first day of my first camp, we were walking to a block (yup, walking), and our visual instructor shouted "Hey, flutes and clarinets, raise your hands." When no one raised their hands, he yelled "Oh, this must not be marching band. F***ing run!"

That was the first day I realized I was NOT in marching band anymore.

In high school

Clarinet player buddy: I went to the DCI show at MTSU

Me: Cool! How did you like it?

Clarinet buddy: It was great! I wanna try out for the Cavaliers!

Me: That's awesome! What brass instrument are you going to learn?

Clarinet buddy: *blank stare*

Me: ...Really dude?

Along those lines, I always am amused when i hear girls talk about going to March Madison or Cavies

I was aware of the "Bando hating" elitism before I stepped into corps, so I decided to wear a saxophone neckstrap to my first camp. The strap didn't survive, and my neck barely made it.
