10 man snarelines...roll call! (pun intended!)

Recommended Posts

I marched in a 10 man snareline in 1990...we won drums and DCI...the whole shabang. I'm wondering 3 things:

1) How many lines marched 10 snares (or more...the entire show) since 1985?

2) How many 10 man (or more) snarelines won the high percussion award since 1985?

3) If you marched in a big-### snareline, tell us where, when, and your experiences! It's a very cool thing to look to your left and right and see a battalion of snare drummers on each side of you!

This should be fun!!!

By the way, the reason I started with 1985 is because there were a plethora of big lines in the late 70s/early 80s for which I'm going to start a thread over in the historical section, so...85 and forward please!!

OK mylar/kevlar whackers...have at it!!!!

This might sound silly and it probably is, but a lot of perc instructors don't like even numbered snare lines because there's no center snare. The rule of thumb to the best of my recollection was to take the strongest drummer, put him in the middle, then take the next two strongest and put them on the ends. That was a long time ago, but that's the way I remember it.

Spirit 09. Not sure on anyone else.

My understanding is that Piper is right, but some lines will take into account height or hearing issues as to which side or how far out a drummer is. Something of combination between both skill and other factors. Of course, different caption heads do different things.

1988 The Freelancers marched 11. Early in the season one side would play something dirty that the other side had no clue about because there were so many drummers. I remember a picture of six of the snares that year and thinking what a big line that was since the sixth snare on the end was really the center snare of the line.

a lot of it has to do with visual too.....makes it easier for some of the drill forms, especially in transition, to have an odd number

I marched a 22-man trumpet line in Cadets 2000, but Cadets had 10 snares in 2000. I think 8 of them were vets so they opened up two spots. Had two center snares (both named Tim). They were ###### and should have won drums.

Unfortunately they were up against what many consider to be the absolute best drumline DCI has ever had to offer.
