Finals Week Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Had a late day at work so I'm just now getting a look at the reports our "on-sight reporters" have sent in so far

I'll start with the Class A corps first.

Los Tiburones- 80.35. Tiburones' hornline had a nice-sounding tone to it but they looked a bit lost visually today.

Central New York DBC- 82.403. Winning the east regional has helped this corps' confidence this season. They had a good overall ensemble sound, and the show really seemed to gel as it went on.

Analog Corps- 81.0. Analog is a rookie corps and has paid its dues over the season. They started a little shaky with some of the visual forms not quite locking in, but improved as the show went on.

Chroma Key- 80.75. A couple glitches both musically and visually but not a bad performance by any means. The judges seem to be a little stingy with some of the early corps so far.

26th Regiment- 81.65. 26th's show is a little light in the design areas, but they have a good balance and strong percussion section.

Thoroughbreds- 83.35. The southern regional champs had been a bit up and down since they burst onto the scene in the middle of the season. They certainly looked back on track with today's performance.

Blades of Blue- 84.35. A VERY impressive performance from the Blades! All sections were going strong as they established themselves as the early favorites.

Mysteria- 82.6. Very entertaining show from these guys. Guard and brass have some nice moments together.

The Bolts- 87.35. Holy cow were these guys good! They've got an extremely complex book and handled it extremely well today.

Nastalgia Percussion- 84.25. Last season's champions haven't quite been performing at the level they were last year, but the definitely had the best drumline of any other corps on the field to this point.

Majestic^3- 82.3. The smallest member of the Majestic Org. hasn't quite had the success that their bigger brothers have had this season. It almost seemed like they were holding back at times in their performance.

Chicago Sound- 86.9. After coming on strong down the stretch, the Chicago contingent didn't disappoint today. A few tweaks and they could easily get to The Bolts' level.

Standings so far:

1: The Bolts- 87.35

2: Chicago Sound- 86.9

3: Blades of Blue- 84.35

4: Nastalgia Percussion- 84.25

5: The Thoroughbreds- 83.35

6: Mysteria- 82.6

7: Central New York DBC- 82.403

8: Majestic^3- 82.3

9: 26th Regiment

10: Analog Corps- 81.0

11: Chroma Key- 80.75

12: Los Tiburones- 80.35

Next update will be at 6:15 with the rest of the Class A corps and the first group of Open Class corps.

Here are the results from the last batch of Class A corps and the first half of Open Class.

Class A

Cape Cod Regiment- 87.25. CCR was a bit behind coming into finals week, but thrust themselves right back into contention tonight.

Hg- 87.25. They must have been inspired by big brother Quiksilver's performance last night.

Inland Empire Elite- 87.0. Demanding shows have been the name of the game with this last group of corps, and Inland pulled out all the stops with a demanding visual program.

Cross- 87.503. Last season's champs came out on the warpath tonight. Their guard and brass could be enough to take them to a repeat.

Xothyme- 87.45. This corps lived up to their name and then some tonight! They were neck and neck with Cross after prelims and should be just as competitive tomorrow night.

Class A Standings:

1: Cross- 87.503

2: Xothyme- 87.45

3: The Bolts- 87.35

4: Hg/Cape Cod Regiment- 87.25

6: Inland Empire Elite- 87.0

7: Chicago Sound- 86.9

8: Blades of Blue- 84.35

9: Nastalgia Percussion- 84.25

10: The Thoroughbreds- 83.35

11: Mysteria- 82.6

12: Central New York DBC- 82.403

13: Majestic^3- 82.3

14: 26th Regiment

15: Analog Corps- 81.0

16: Chroma Key- 80.75

17: Los Tiburones- 80.35

Open Class

8:00 The Screws- 90.0. Tight, tight, tight playing, marching and drumming from last season's champs. They're not ready to be written off just yet.

7:45 Eeclypse- 88.05. Some marching mistakes didn't take away from the overall effectiveness of the visual program.

7:30 Majestic-2- 87.75. A good mix of music and visual performances to push them above the pile in the middle of the field.

7:15 Tampa Bay Storm- 86.45. They continued the trend of strong musical shows but easier visual programs that we've been seeing a lot of tonight.

7:00 The Sinfonians- 88.4. They've had one of the most cohesive shows on the field in terms of design so far tonight.

6:45 Quilt Cadets- 86.2. Seemed like they were playing it safe a bit. Prelims is definitely not the night for that.

6:30 Hurricanes- 86.35. Good musical exposure, but the visual book had the look of a program that was watered down a bit to create that exposure.

6:00 Nastalgia- 87.4. Really strong GE and music shows, but staff seemed a bit disappointed with the visual side of the performance.

5:45 Oostburg Barnstormers- 90.5. Starting to pick some of the early-season magic back up.

5:30 INT- 88.0. Unlike normal INT's, everybody stayed in the stands for this group. They looked pretty solid.

5:15 Storm Troopers- 86.15. Visual ensemble and design were really clicking tonight.

5:00 Alamo Scouts- 86.55. Almost the polar opposite of Crimson Kings here- good visual GE, but the music side suffered a bit.

4:45 Crimson Kings- 86.95. The Kings turned in a strong visual performance and backed it up with a good hornline show, but the judges seemed to think there was a lack of GE.

4:30 Symphonic Sounds- 85.9. More emphasis on visual than on music for this corps. The group looked tight visually but the brass line had some timing problems.

4:15 The Old School- 84.1. The crowd and music judges appreciated this corps' throwback style, but the visual program left people wanting more.

4:00 Crimson Lancer Cadets- 84.1. The music book was the highlight of this corp's performance, but the visual program seemed a bit basic over all.

Current standings:

1: Oostburg Barnstormers- 90.5

2: The Screws- 90.0

3: The Sinfonians- 88.4

4: Eeclypse- 88.05

5: INT- 88.0

6: Majestic^2- 87.75

7: Nastalgia- 87.4

8: Crimson Kings- 86.95

9: Alamo Scouts- 86.55

10: Tampa Bay Storm- 86.45

11: Hurricanes- 86.35

12: Quilt Cadets- 86.2

13: Storm Troopers- 86.15

14: Symphonic Sounds- 85.9

15: The Old School/Crimson Lancer Cadets- 84.1

Last batch of reports are coming in on the Open Class corps. Look for recaps to be posted shortly for all divisions today.

Les Blanc Chevaliers- 90.35. Guard and brass performed with passion and fire tonight as LBC executed a very demanding book quite well.

Texas Zephyrs- 90.0. With an intricate book and powerful percussion, the Zephyrs showed that they are clearly in the mix tonight.

Star of Hawaii- 90.35. Star of Hawaii has been going back and forth with their rivals Les Blanc Chevaliers all season, so it's only fitting that they should be in a tie with LBC at this point in the competition.

Chicago Enforcers- 89.6. Like their younger brother corps, Chicago Sound, the Enforcers seem to be peaking at just the right point of the season. But they may need to squeeze a little more "wow" out of their visual book if they want to contend for top honors this year.

Oregon Marauders- 90.65. They had a "total package" night for sure. If they can do that level of performance again on Saturday, they could walk away with a ring.

Mercury- 88.95. I think the stress of having to perform from such a high seed may have gotten in their heads a bit, as there were some minor visual miscues that we usually haven't seen from Mercury.

Riverside Elite. 89.6. Struggled to execute visually at times, but still managed to keep up with the top groups musically.

Recaps are up for all divisions. Some definite surprises and a few disappointments in World Class as OVT and Feenicks just weren't able to recapture the magic of prelims night and dropped out of the competition. Iron Knights and Staffordshire Regiment made some big strides and went from just making quarterfinals to solidly advancing to semifinals. Star of Jupiter, Quiksilver, The Knights and Polaris Regiment remained at the top of the standings, while the Stud Bolts proved that last night was a fluke and jumped right back into contention for a three-peat.

I'll admit I haven't been keeping as close of an eye on Open and Class A as I should have been, but I'm thrilled to see that the competition in those divisions is just as tight as World Class has been.

Update 2- and we have some interesting numbers.

Majestic- 93.319. These guys came out on fire after the break! It's impressive to see how a corps that started up during the season could get to the level they're at in the visual department. This group could be be a dark horse for a finalist spot.

Roselle Park Conquistadors- 92.504. A long-time competitor and a sentimental favorite to secure a spot in finals, Roselle Park had a really strong showing today. After struggling to break into the top echelon of corps for much of the season, they put on a really strong show in the GE and guard departments. If their percussion can come through, this could be the year they make the top 12.

Iron Knights- 91.646. Another first-time corps that's enjoying a successful season, Iron Knights have one of the most demanding music books on the field. Tonight however seemed like a struggle to rise to the challenge of that book.

Staffordshire Regiment- 91.641. The kids from England did their country proud with their performance tonight, but the judges didn't seem to buy into their program.

Lake Ontario Crusaders- 91.745. Ontario Crusaders have had a breakout season this year, competing with top-flight corps on a regular basis. The corps doesn't have many weaknesses, but the judges seemed to think that the visual package needs to gel a little more.

Cincinnati Light Brigade- 93.018. The Light Brigade were scrambling to make it to the gate for their performance time, but once they got on the field, they put together a splendid all-around performance.

Avengers- 92.129. Avengers' hornline was a house of fire tonight, playing some of the cleanest licks we've heard all season. That strong brass line could carry them all the way to finals.

Cryptic Paradox- 91.261. This newcomer corps has been something of a paradox all season long. Their show is quite intellectual and needs more than one viewing to grasp. They were good musically tonight but were a little sluggish visually.

Standings so far:

1: Majestic- 93.319

2: Cincinatti Light Brigade- 93.018

3: Roselle Park Conquistadors- 92.504.

4: Avengers- 92.129

5: Potomac River Knights- 91.812

6: Lake Ontario Crusaders- 91.745.

7: Fortissimo Regiment- 91.688

8: Iron Knights- 91.646

9: Staffordshire Regiment- 91.641

10: Crimson Lancers- 91.488

11: Freedom Spears- 91.391

12: Cryptic Paradox- 91.261

13: Plata Brass- 91.194

14: Confederate Regiment- 91.182

15: Hometown Jocks- 90.217

16: Star of Florida- 89.967

Next update is at 9. The heavy hitters are waiting on deck.

Um forgive me if this messes everything up. But the folks over here at Breathe DAH are sitting here kinda confused at the moment. But upon further review we found that The Cincinnati Light Brigade seem to have been completely left off of the Caption Ranking System. According to CLB's score given here (93.018) that should have put us in 15th thus qualifying for quarterfinals, in which we were not included in on. We hate to be the reason to shove someone else out of Quarterfinals, but the staff and students have just worked too hard to be forgotten about. We hope this issue can be resolved with as little ill-effect as possible.
