Empire Statesmen 2013 Show Announcement

I think you are correct in that attendance was down for the last year in Rochester and I also find it puzzeling. If you are going to attend finals and are traveling with a spouse (wife / husband / significant other) who is not a drum corps person Rochester doesn't offer much as compared to Annapolis. WAY more to do at Annapolis. Also, better restaurants, easier travel, just better. IMO

I think the economy hit, and to be honest, I know many people who were just tired of Rochester. It's a shame, the last year was the most competitive year

this is what i got from my source. and why DCA hasn't said this is beyond me. annapolis is not available. it is a football stadium and yes they have football games scheduled for that weekend. DCA has a marketing problem . this should have been said with the announcement. why leave people scrstching their heads? this is exactly the reason DCA is getting in trouble. they need to explain why they do the things they do. this is not supposed to be a place where secrets are kept. maybe if they told people about the football games they wouldn't be so alienated about going to rochester. and the other bids were not any good. that's what i've been told. this person that i can't name and knows this won't be the one to tell. now why is that? somebody please explain all of this foolishness to me.

no drum corps circuit is good at PR

Yeah, if I had stopped to think about it a little harder I would have realized the error in my comment. Still, not having either Open Class corps from Rochester makes it difficult to attract local fans. Plus, NY is not a central hub. Pennsylvania would actually be more central to corps now.

... hmmm, sorry for continuing the derailment. I will stop commenting about venues in this thread.

Keep posting here, BOSMarcher!

I understood what you meant, so only mentioned White Sabers in my reply. It looks like White Sabers would then become the "home" competing corps. Can't have the same effect as a group using the host city as a base, for sure. I know local media is much more interested in covering, promoting events that involve an actual home team.

One benefit to Rochester has always been the participation of Canadian corps and fans. It would be interesting to know if that group was significantly diminished at Annapolis. I would sure think so. Then again, any negative effect was softened by newer fans from southern areas.

This year's finals was the first DCA show I ever attended. I was quite entertained by Empire's show (more than Cadets2, scores notwithstanding) and felt that in some respects, their take on Las Vegas was more fun than Spirit's had been earlier in the year. It didn't make me think of 1990s H.S. bands, but that may be because I'm not a specialist in that regard. I'm very disappointed that they're abandoning drum corps, but I wish them well.

I do have a question about the 2012 show: were Empire's poker chip props inspired by Spirit's props, or did Spirit sell/give them to Empire?

Good observation..... Empire did field Spirit's poker chips, although I do not know the logistics of this.

So why hasn't DCA mentioned attendance figures. I do know who ever gives them the best bid gets the show and I guess Rochester won. Also, no competing corps in Maryland either, that isn't a valid excuse. I already said Pennsy would be my other choice but alas there are a multitude of reasons why DCA won't return to the Keystone state.

DCA has never in 30 years released attendance or money figures. just the policy.

This is not denying anything you just wrote, but crowds at the southern shows have grown or stayed steady over the past several years. It is more than likely because the same groups keep coming back, making the show consistently good, but I guess my point is that they are perhaps shifting nationally. Then again, if crowds are a big deal, why did Empire not just perform at a couple of local DCI shows? The crowds would still find them enteraining. Not sure if crowds are the true probelm...

The only "local" DCI shows that I know of in upstate NY are Buffalo and Rome...and Rome isn't exactly local, it's about 3 hours IIRC. In addition, if either or both of those shows happen to take place during the week, it could have a significant impact on the ability of some members to participate.
