Diners, Drum Corps & Drives

I just looked at the dark skies all around us and made a comment that i couldn't believe it wasn't raining...then within 15 seconds it started. Then the stadium lights went out!

Rain stopped, and while waiting for the lights they set up for a run on a concert formation, with feet. Basses and tenors on stands. Man oh man...what a sound. They are also pushing things from a brass volume standpoint at times. They said it was the first time they played the show in standstill since Weed! Lights are back...extended gush right now.

My buddy from Carolina and his son have joined us!

No props tonight. The flag additions are in the closer. Look for a French flag toss from behind the walls, and I believe these are new.

Field is a little wet and soggy, but only a drizzle of rain. Hoping for a run at 10:40.

Thanks for getting my kid in this picture! He's in the front ensemble on the right at the bass drum & gong.

I almost cropped him out! This one is a little better, the shadow on the drum from those low lights is pretty cool! I will try and get a couple more for you this weekend.

A little disappointment in not getting to see a full run through, but the sound of the show in the standstill made up for it. The drum corps gods giveth...and they taketh away.

Had to be a little frustrating for the corps dealing with the weather and the lights. As usual, the best drum corps deal with such adversity and make the most out of whatever facility and weather issues they face. That is always a great life lesson to the members. This is the time of year when every run through is a countdown to how many are left. Still, some extra free time tonight can only help with the final push. A little concerned with some coughing I heard on side 2 from a couple peeps. "Wash your hands" and "cover your mouth if you cough" reminders on the food truck white board. Doesn't appear to be anything serious based on how they are performing. Also one front ensemble had her ankle wrapped and elevated and sat out tonight. Hard to believe only a week remains.

This show is just so classic drum corps. No innovative electronic voice or amplification, a simplistic yet really effective use of the props. No main characters or elaborate story lines, just a lot of dam* fine drumming and "bugling" going on, (and of course some great throwing and catching of stuff). The brass line has been turned loose to full air support in several impacts in the show. They are also teching the little articulation details that really polish up the effect. The additions of the flags in the closer are really cool. So much work put in today for what appears to be 2 tosses of new equipment. The visual sets are starting to lock with consistency. And the uniform is so much a part of the visual effect.

Refined? That might be the term I am looking for to describe SCV this year.

After seeing PR last night, I thought they might have a chance to move up. After seeing Vanguard today, I believe it is Cadets who should be looking over their shoulder. Knowing them, they are only looking ahead.

Can't wait for tomorrow night to see.

The drum guest we had today was seeing his first live drum corps ever. He said that it really made him want to get on the field, and that he so regretted not being exposed to DCI 5 years ago. He would have made a great marching member! Maybe DCA is in the cards for him.

Tomorrow we go back to PR for show day practice in Robesonia, then to my favorite venue in all of DCI, and one of my favorite places on this earth. It's gonna be over way too soon!

Here's some pix from tonight taken by my youngest, a great trumpet player who wants to go to photography school.

Absolutely a perfect day, mid 70's, low humidity. On our way to Robesonia. Everybody is super pumped for an exciting day of drum corps!

Today we lost 2 guys from yesterday's group, but we pick up 3 Phangirls from Carolina, making 6 girls total. I suggest additional security around the podium today!

Robesonia is a small town on the middle of PA farm country. We arrived to find the corps using a side field for visual block. They were allowed limited time on the stadium field, where they are moving for ensemble, sweet for us!

Holy crap PR! The intensity today is over the top! Allentown jbc yell is in! Working the kill, the intensity and mood of this chapter has grown to epic level. DE commented that this mood is possibly something totally unique to anything ever tried. Scary is rarely done, and it's really, really cool! Corps is on fire right now! And btw...the Queen is napping now, and security is in place to protect Dean.
