Introducing People to DCI (World Class, specifically)

Recommended Posts

What are the best videos to show people in order to convert them to the dark side? I have a few I usually use, but I've only gotten into DCI recently and I haven't been able to listen to as much of the repertoire as I would've liked. I thought this would be useful to a lot of people, so, ya know. And in my experience, people respond MUCH better to videos that are in HD(480p, but I realize that in the olden that wasn't really an option) and videos that are short-ish. Here are the ones I use:

Just thought I'd ask and maybe help some people introduce DCI to their friends/relatives!

I suppose it really all depends on what musical tastes you believe the person has that you will be attempting to( as you said ) " bring them to the dark side". If they are totally unfamiliar with DCI Drum Corps, its probably going to be very difficult to win them over with a video, instead of bringing them live to a show. A video really can't come even remotely close to the real thing ( as most of us here probably are aware of) . But if all I had to go with was a video, I would show one of the yearly " DCI Highlights " that you can find on youtube. With the highlights, the newbie gets a quick hit of a variety of different Corps, music, uniforms, styles, etc. in one relatively quick hit. While showing an entire show of one Corps on video might seem worthwhile on the surface to us, I'm not so sure that works as effectively on video with a newbie as would a highlights reel would. But maybe others have other suggestions with this too that might work for you. Good luck whatever you decide. Its always refreshing when we hear of fans such as yourself wanting to expand the activities appeal to people unfamiliar with it.

Now here's another question... Is it smart to bring someone to a Drum Corps even if it's super early in the season? I want to take some of my friends to Innovations in Brass in Akron (June 17th), because I don't think someone new to DCI would even really know the difference between a performance in mid June and one on Finals night... but I could be wrong. Should I wait until the performance in Massilon? (August 3rd) And still, the videos are mostly for convincing people to go to their first show.

JeremysBugels "Best of DCI" videos are perfect for that. When I was first getting into DCI, those videos were ones I went back to all the time. I'd highly suggest those.

You missed some really good ones. I think that Crown and Bluecoats shows are some of the best ways to get people to fall in love with the activity (especially since they tend to be the crowds' darlings).

That's up to you, hell I even enjoy early season shows. Watching Crown rehearse preseason in 2013 is probably my favorite live experience. Though late the shows will be complete. Up to you.....however:

IMO..maybe try both so they see the progression. If you only have 1 choice personally I would go to a later show when all the bells and whistles are in. Remember, just like at a fine restaurant we eat with our eyes first.

NOW for thread hijackers: that was not an invite to debate ANYTHING!..lol

Also, be prepared to be surprised. I once brought an adult couple to their first show in 2012. When it was over, and before the scores were announced, they were positively certain that the judges were easily going to award the Jersey Surf 1st place. ( haha!)

I got lucky though... they liked the overall spectacle, it was a workweek, they were tired, so we all decided to leave before the scores were announced, I was thus saved from having to do any 'splainin about the scores, placements, that nite.

Weirdly enough, I actually love explaining stuff like that to people! And everyone I would bring is in the 15-17 year old age group, so they'd be pretty full of energy. But thanks. AND IF YOU'RE VIEWING THIS, POST A VIDEO. DO IT. YOUR FAV. WE ALL HAVE ONE.

Glad you have Creep in there.

I catch all kinds of flack from drum corps friends when I say that was the best single minute of modern drum corps I've ever seen. In retrospect I see that it could been cleaner but when I saw and heard that segment I was completely entranced. It. Was. Amazing. And I still stand by the statement (until something better comes along).

(too bad the rest of the show didn't live up to that quality of design).
