Things to do in Indy

Recommended Posts

Tavern on South is walking distance from the stadium if I remember correctly. Had the best burger I've ever had there (buffalo)! So good! Good beer too according my husband!

:guinesssmilie:

One of our planned stops this year. Last year we had the grilled tuna. Awesome! And, yes the beer is great, too.

My better half is originally from Cincinnati so we take the opportunity to go back there as well. Fly into Indy on Thursday early afternoon, grab some lunch at Skyline Chili (Cincinnati style chili, very much a regional thing. And not everyone's cup of tea but if you've never tried it. Might be worth a shot!) And then I head to the lot. Spend the late afternoon and evening watching everyone's lot.

Do a breakfast at Maxine's Chicken and Waffles and then hit up Semis and Finals. On Sunday we head out to Cincinnati ( just over an hour drive) and go to Kings Island amusement park......we have garbage for thrill rides in Colorado so this is more than worth it if you're into this type of fun.

Fly home Monday.

Also echo others comments about St Elmo, excellent place.

The Moto GP motorcycle race is at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway the weekend of finals. It's a chance to see vehicles in action at the world's greatest racecourse.

The main race is Sunday but there are practice and qualifying sessions on Friday and Saturday.

Check out the Jazz Kitchen in Broad Ripple as well (about a 10 minute drive straight north of downtown). Their schedule and menu is available at thejazzkitchen.com. Nothing overly notable on Finals weekend, but a great place for anyone stopping through.

The Indiana State Fair starts on August 7 (http://www.in.gov/statefair/fair/). I went with my family last year and we had a lot of fun.

Every DCI fan will have a great time at the "Rhythm Discovery Center", which is located right next to the DCI offices. You can also visit the offices themselves, but that's about as exciting as...visiting some offices. Still, the waiting room has a display of buttons from just about every corps that has ever existed -- worth looking at since you'll already be right there.

And though it seems too obvious to need mentioning, don't miss the tour of the Indianapolis Speedway. Even if you aren't a racing fan (I'm not), it's fascinating.

Restaurants

Adobo Grill is good if you like Mexican (I was amazed to find a good Mexican place in Indy). The tableside guac is great and the ceviche is as good as I've had in Mexico.

Ram Restaurant is a microbrewry/brew pub. The beers are excellent (I like the Butt Face Amber) and the food is very good too.

Weber Grill is always jammed - probably because the vent the BBQ aromas and you can smell it for blocks. It's not bad but pretty expensive for what you get.

Jimmy Johns is a good place to grab something to carry in to eat in your seat during the show.

Things to do

The Indy Zoo isn't huge but it is very nice. Had a new primate exhibit last year that is pretty cool.

Being a veteran and history buff I really enjoy some of the historical monuments. The Soldiers and Sailors Monument is a very nice monument. Very interesting architecture, great view from the top and a nice Civil War museum in the base.

The Indiana World War Memorial & Museum is pretty great too.

If you don't mind a bit of a walk (or a cab ride assuming you have no car) The Scottish Rite Cathedral is gorgeous.

And of course there are the museums near White River Park:

Indiana State Museum

Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art

NCAA Hall of Champions

And of course the park itself

Forgot about the speedway (we went there the first year when we had a car) and the Rhythm Discovery Center which is in the basement of our hotel (Embassy Suites)
