Carolina Crown 2016

Really like the show, but the only thing that I did not like that well, was the rearrangement of El Tango de Roxanne. Hopefully they continue to rearrange it as the season comes along.

Just watched the show. Great energy! The brass during the closer was totally unreal! Whether they can keep this energy up as they continue to flesh out the show will be key, especially with the tough competition they face.

Okay, so I've watched it 5 or 6 times already.. and the video I watched was pretty HQ so I can go ahead and start to make my statements. Gonna be listening/watching and typing at the same time

Disclaimer: I repeat myself a lot. Hard not to when many things are happening and you're typing as it comes to you!

Pre-Show/Opener:

- Loving the sounds of the whistle and the howling. They added chains too. Reminds me of Django Unchained.

- Moving the thing into place.

- Oh, that dark low brass sound in the start of Ecstasy of Gold.. Really a beautiful tone. In fact they all sound really good. The guard is the focal point

- We can see the tragedy take place. Someone gets shot and dies (which constitutes the vigilante justice).

- Medea starting out, sounds great.. and then BOOM! That opening hit. Freaking BRILLIANT. They sound impeccable.

- Really loving the rifles here.. holy hell. They're spectacular.. also digging the percussion writing here.

- Love the drill moving into and starting out Journey..

- What a complex piece to be moving that fast and playing.. The flags are awesome too!

- Love how clearly the percussion sticks out.. very clean here.

- In that sort of triangular shape, that little run needs cleaning but it sounds pretty #### cool.. they also added some visual to it.

- Closer coming to an end. Lots of movement and counter melody in the mellos. This drill is so #### nice.

- Percussion and guard stealing the show again!

- Things moving again to around the 30-35.

- Brass comes back in hot! More excellent flag work.

- ####! THAT HIT.

- Pit scalar runs are really cool and fit the high brass line pretty well. Low brass comes in with some sound and #### is it good.

Roxanne:

- Drums sound great..

- The trombone soloist is so good. His sound is unreal.. he adds a sort of jazzy sound to the piece.

- I'm really glad he lengthened the first note of Roooooooxaannnnee.

- The brass just took me away to someplace I've never been during that piece. So much so that my writing stopped and I was still blown away.. after the 5th viewing!

- Guard flags being thrown off the thing. Really cool!

- Brass is sounding great here. Some dirt in there, but that's okay. It's june.

- Drill is fast and fun to watch.

- Ending out roxanne.. almost sound like Dies Irae from last year. My favorite moment of the show so far.

Ballad:

- Bert is on the thing and that solo is gorgeous. Things moving as he plays.. so great, the effect.

- Horn counter melody, and yes it's a horn not a mello. It's equally as beautiful, but she's off screen so I can't see where she is.

- Brass drill on the side is really cool too!

- Loving the sound in the front ensemble.

- OH BOY! THAT HIGH BRASS!

- Mellophones remind me SO much of 2014 ballad here (which is a favorite of mine).

- I love the little Hallelujah theme. They do it so well.. but wait a minute?

- Yeah, moving into part two of the ballad. The Trio.

- Trumpet solo is great still.. I would have done a different section of The Trio, though.

- Now the whole corps is playing, drums too. Could be more here, but this sounds SO cool!

- Ohhh, dissonance and a lovely resolution to the ballad.

- This one is something to watch out for this year.. freaking amazing arranging Michael Klesch. Amazing!

Closer:

- Interesting start. Very very fast.. the rifles are KILLING it here.

- .......... the runs. What did I just witness there? That was so cool.

- I hear Equilibrium here. Sounds amazing.

- WOAH Medea again.. but a more full sound. Definitely more rich.

- This is obviously a temporary closer.. The Flags are so good already.. it's crazy.

- The Good, The Bad and The Ugly whistle there as they move into place. YES!

- Great ending to the show.

(I know this is a temporary closer, but this one is MILES.. and I mean MILES better than last years first iteration).

Overall Impressions: Objectively speaking, they sound incredible. Better than any other group I've seen yet. They have a lot to improve on, but the canvas is far superior than past years.

Subjectively Speaking: They'll win. That was my favorite show from Crown, and it's day one. Yes! Better than 2012. Yes! Better than 2013.. this is something special. I cannot wait to see what the rest of the corps have to show us, but I can assure you this: 2016 is a year for the books. We're all in for a treat.
