Readable drill

Recommended Posts

No, the genitalia aspect was still not a factor at all according to the quote you gave. You just clarified that the disintegration of the mascot was an important factor, which is a valuable clarification. But it was still all about the mascot, and not at all about the space ship. The NBC article asserts that it is all about the space ship and it's misinterpretation, when they must have known better because they included the memo. NBC was deliberately misleading its audience.

Right; I was broadly meaning the visual drill forms (ship + destructing mascot) being at the heart of the problem, not necessarily the drill forms being NSFW. I definitely didn't make that clear at all and was more clarifying explicitly why the Big 12 thought the halftime show, explicitly their visual design, was a problem with their policy. I've read elsewhere online (not necessarily on DCP) that people thought it was due to a copyright issue.

You're right about that NBC article: it's awful, especially in light of the Big 12 statement that is pretty clear where the issue was. I honestly hadn't read that statement before today, on ESPN, and was surprised that this controversy has been so heavily reported in news and social media for all the wrong reasons.

Of course, modern "journalism" is all about "get clicks" instead of "get the story right" so this isn't a surprise

Yeah, it's published under "US News" which probably is a big boost for the writer in both news category and page views. Would it have even been published under sports if the story was only that a school was penalized for insulting a mascot of a team that wasn't present? If it had been published at all it would have gotten almost no views. So they achieved their objective with this.

NBC lied.

From the actual news release the article is based on (and refers to in the second paragraph), it is clear that the sanctions were not imposed for the space ship resembling male genitalia at all. It wasn't even a factor as far as the press release is concerned.

There was another issue clearly identified that was the sole cause of the sanctions, and which was only hinted at in the article: specifically that the Jayhawk mascot depicted is not the mascot of either team playing the game; it is the mascot of the University of Kansas. The game was between University of Kansas and South Dakota. It is a violation of conference rules to depict a mascot other than the two teams playing in the game. That's it.

Rereading the NBC article, it is clearly deliberately misleading.

also, that really is an awful article! I can understand leading with the NSFW 'rage watch' "controversy," but to not be more explicit in the body of the article is poor form

On the flip side of this argument, it sounded like they were playing Michael Giacchino Star Trek music, right? Always awesome to hear that!

I've never heard it before or seen the film, but this scene may have the main theme in the background.

On the other hand, if it weren't for the social media firestorm about the alleged portrayal of a sex act, then I suspect this show probably wouldn't have caught the attention of the conference at all.

Back in '94-95, the Longhorn Band, along with the Baylor band, did a joint did a tribute to the last days of the Southwest Conference. They made formations for each team's helmet logo and played excerpts from the fight songs for the schools. When they got to A&M, the Longhorn Band played the theme to the Mickey Mouse Club.

The Big XII(-II) has no sense of humor.

and because of the erroneous reporting that the sanctions came down because of NSFW interpretation of the sloppy drill I think I read a crowd-funded thing went up and over $10k was raised to pay the fine.

Well Jeesh, at least TBDBITL only offends a few band members each year. This place offends entire stadium-fulls at one time!

Surely their director will be axed for promoting a "sexualized culture" in the band that sullies the wholesomeness of the football game.

A $5000 voluntary fine? Is there a book of published "screw-up values" published somewhere? Great move! "Here! Take our money quick because we love our band director!". Too bad TBDBITL alum didn't try that plea right out of the chute, might have saved the program.

The entire band should be fired and replaced for screwing up the execution so badly.
