Sexyguardcap
Most of the instruments in the pit area are made for indoor orchestra even then a proscenium is used to project sound. The horns, field drums flags poles aren't amped. As you know Now you can hear the maracas, djembe, shekere, udu, agogo, moringa, toca and cowbells more clearly. You can always use more COWBELL! (inside joke for thoes who know) As I said before; Amplification is a CHOICE NOT A MANDATE! Really How many more points do you get when you amp your udu? If the corps that were so against amplification in the first place had any balls they wouldn't amp. What's more important gaining that extra couple of tenths (if that) or selling your soul. ( a little dramatic but, you get the point) -There are people who want Drum Corps to be like it used to be NO AMPS! -There are people who want Drum Corps to be like it used to be G Bugles -There are people who want Drum Corps to be like it used to be No dancing guards -There are people who want Drum Corps to be like it used to be Loud like Madison 75 -There are people who want Drum Corps to be like it used to be No crazy marching -There are people who want Drum Corps to be like it used to be NO bugles The man that introduced me to drum corps, MY uncle. Stopped going to drum corps shows after seeing Star of Indiana in 93 THAT'S NOT DRUM CORPS! IF DRUM CORPS TURN INTO THIS, I'M NOT GOING ANY MORE. The same man that owned every Drum Corps News from 196? and every DCWord until 94 and every record drum corps ever produced. he taped and filmed boot legg stuff too. ( I'm one of the few people who can watch Machachos 75. from New london Conn. I think. ) The same man who missed the birth of his son to watch finals in 1978 in Denver! Done in by Star 93. I own that stuff now. If you look back, there has always been protest and out cry in drum corps. Done correctly it provokes thought. Done incorrectly. Well, as I like to say. Don't contribute to the Dumbassification of Drum Corps. Whats good about amps: -quality amps like the ones the Devils, Cavies and SCV have. -minimal use of amps -the discrete placement of the amps like SCV Whats bad about amps to me: -Feed back during the show Cadets( its an accident I know) -Narration! -Singing no matter how good you sound -drum talk into the mics. It sounds just as good without. Good Night All! Edited July 20, 2005 by Sexyguardcap
Jeff Ream
yes that's it. just because we dislike amps, we're all old dinosaurs. see me, at 36, liking old and new...drum corps of the 50's thru 2005. i just dislike amps. but thanks for the gross mischaracterization of a large majority of those who dislike amps. huskerman15
I. HATE. AMPED. VOCALS. And that is like, 95% of the reason I do not like amps. Now, I understand how it can be used for the pit to introduce some interesting (and not to mention creative) new things in drum corps (for lack of better words...it's 1:11 am). If everyone could use it as discretely as SCV, that would be great. BUT, I have one beef with that. We would also be bridging the gap between drum corps and professional sports (of which I want to be as big as possible), whereas the corps with the most money will get the most percussion points. Why? Because the corps with the most money are able to get the amp systems (and the better amp systems) so the pit is able to do more without having to worry about being heard. The amped pit is able to show and show off more than the unamped pit. See: Cavies 05. The way I see it, in all areas, amps are a shortcut. You can still show off your pit's amazing talent without amps, for example. See: Blue Devils 00. The most creative Blue Devils show in history, I think. Why can't they be like that anymore? GAH! Edit - BTW, I'm 18. Double edit - Props due to Matthew Willcock (is that right? I'm going off your podcast...), for basically voicing that amp opinion before me. Yeah, I basically repeated it, but I happen to completely agree with it. I always thought that, but never really put it into words. Michael Boo
...How many more points do you get when you amp your udu?... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't think I've ever pondered a single question on this forum with more intensity. I think amping one's udu is a misdemeanor in some societies. But it does sound like fun and if anyone's tried it in the privacy of their own home, please PM me. Sorry to hijack the serious nature of your question. It just struck me as something I couldn't allow to pass. Someone out there...I'd like to see an avatar proclaiming, "Amp your udu." It would make a great button as well (and a great name for a rock band) and should be considered as the title for Crunchy Frog's next venture. It would also make a good response to someone who just insulted you. Person 1: "Yeah. I wouldn't expect anything different from you." Person 2—(you): "Amp your udu." It's also fun to say fast several times in-a-row. I want to see this become the DCP catch phrase of the year. How about a t-shirt as well? Are you with me? Okay, it's official. I am experiencing sleep deprivation. Mike Edited July 20, 2005 by Michael Boo
GMichael1230
to Sexyguardcap, I reallt want to "jump on your bandwagon" . I pretty much feel the same way. However, you make to may assumptions, mischaracterizations, and to many generalities. But part of what you write is right on the money !! Welcome to DCP ~G~

I come from an era whose philosophy was............."if you can't carry it..............you shouldn't be playing it......" Obviously, to me, amps are out of the question. (still trying to get used to a PIT. But, having said that, I guess if it's good enough for the Marines it's good enough for me.)

Money has always been tremendously important. With it you can buy the best horns, the best drums, the best guard equipment (and more of it). You can also pay to hire the best staff, and more technicians to provide each member with better individual attention. You can hire the best designers, so that you know you'll be taking the field with a great show. More money buys you better busses, better food, and cut down tour fees, all of which not only make it easier for talented kids to join but also ensure that they don't have to worry about anything but performing the show. Money is a factor with amps, of course, but it's a factor in every single other aspect. If that's you're biggest reason for wanting to get rid of them, then we have a lot more to get rid of than just amps.
