"Penalties":

Pre "DCI":

Way back in the days of "US Flag on the Field" (Which DCI in it's wisdom has done away with, "Not Art" enough): The Chicago Cavaliers lost the 1966 VFW National Championship due to a "Trailing" violation as one of the US flag "Guards" went over the "Finish Line" (Yeah, we had "start & 'finish" lines back in those days) and got whacked with a one POINT penalty that landed them in second place behind the Casper Troopers (Who had won Prelims).

The "Kicker" in all of this was that the the "Timming and Penalties" judge was a Cavaliers Alumnus. He "Did the right thing".

Cavies nearly missed the 1970 VFW finals in Miami when their prelims drill created a bunch of flag violations.

But see that doesn't make sense if it was their cone. I could see throwing a penalty IF it belonged to the host venue.

No....the "damaging the venue" quote was in refrence to the sabre stab into the ground...the cone was a different year, in fact.

The '97 penalty was for the flash from the camera.

I'm pretty sure that the flash wasn't the cause of the penalty. VK had a camera flash in 1990(?) not once, not twice, but at least THREE time during their show and they didn't get penalized for it. And of all the corps, I highly doubt that DCI would let it slide with VK....

The Anaheim Kingsmen were "rewarded" with, if memory serves me correctly, a 13 point pentalty for reporting one day late for prelims at the US Open in Marion, Ohio. The staff thought the corps was scheduled to report on day 2 of prelims when they actually were scheduled the day before. This huge pentalty placed them almost dead last in prelims, however, they went onto win the finals! A true story.
Probably the "Mother Of All Penalties"!!

Having been there and witnessing the 73 U.S. Open & Freak Ohio Hurricane( :P ) I was always amazed at how the corps kept it's composure, went out and performed a fantastic show, and pulled off the victory.

From what I've been told by alums of the 73 Kingsmen, they found out the night before about the schedule snafu. When they arrived in Marion(They were always a local favorite) The Marion police met them at the city limits to give them an escort to Harding High so they could hit the field as soon as possible.

"The Biggest Hit":

This may or may not be a "record" for a "Lateness" penalty, but "Way Back" (Again, my pretties) in 1964 the Brooklyn based St Josephs Patron Cadets got hammered with a seventeen POINT penalty for lateness at the NY Daily News run "World's Fair Championship" prelims, held at the (Then) brand new Shea Stadium in Flushing Meadow NY. Needless to say, this placed them out of the "Finals", at the bottom of the Prelim finishers.

The "Humerous" aspect of this is that Brooklyn is only a "Stones Throw" from the 1964 World's Fair site out on Long Island.

That's pretty noteworthy, alright. But back then corps used to do multiple engagements throughout a weekend -- not just evening competitions. In any case, I do wonder what they were doing . . . :laugh:
