skajerk
Here is the "old school" test:In 1989, did you think that 1972 drum corps was old school? Uh huh...That's what I thought... :) M Actually, no. Back when I marched, I just thought it was all drum corps. However now I think otherwise. jake_the_hydra
I think one of the main reasons why they sounded so much more refined after the 2000 season was because they switched to Bb horns. Personally I really liked the sound of their hornline in 2000. It wasnt perfect but I found the raw, masculine and (sometimes a little) gritty sound exciting. That was part of it, but by far the most significant factor in the way they sound now was bringing in the new brass team in 2001. Period. Now '65..... that was old school.
Triple Forte
The Cavaliers of today are nothing like the Cavaliers of 15 years ago, except for the fact that in both eras they have been universally loved. The two pairs of four consecutive shows I listed are the defining shows of each era. So the question is this: which consecutive four shows, out of the two time periods listed, do you prefer?I find the answer to this question very simple: 1989-1992, without a doubt. These are my four absolute favorite Cavies shows, and coindidentally they were performed consecutively. Sure, the drill is nothing compared to what they've been doing this decade, but the fact that the music they performed back then is lightyears ahead of their music this decade puts them over the top. Just listen to the first two minutes of the 1990 show and you'll see what I mean. Seeing that show live, hearing that musical moment, must have been one of the greatest feelings of the world. The Cavies of that era were loud, powerful, emotional, glorious...what a great four years. And for reference, in case you forget: 1989- Gloria 1990- Cavalier Anthems 1991- Cavalier Anthems: Advent Collection 1992- Revolution and Triumph 2000- Niagara Falls 2001- Four Corners 2002- Frameworks 2003- Spin Cycle I believe that I am a older year Cavalier fan..... I like: 1985, 86, 88, 90, 91, 93, 96, 2004 Yup....I voted for the older years Triple Forte

Phirefenix
1989 is my fave Cavie show of all time. Hands down. Followed by 88, and 86 I believe is when they did Liturgical Dances. BOth stellar shows for their time.
madalumni
While I really enjoy going back and watching/listening to older Cavalier shows (especially 89), what they have accomplished in terms of design and performance in the last 5 years is amazing. The visual and musical performance demand is a significant step forward from what it was back then. In some years, it may not be as emotional or melodic, but in my opinion, it is definately more impactful overall. However, none of their current success would be possible without the foundation they layed down 15-20 years ago.
