MikeD
No, I don't. Adding valves, or a pit or other things didn't change the drum corps experience from brass and percussion, which is how it's still defined.Woodwinds will. We've had this argument plenty, you know. :P Yes, we have... :) ...and adding a valve was the initial step towards band instrumentation, IMO. Woodwinds on the other hand would not nessesariy make a corps have a "better QUALITY of sound". Just a different quality of sound and one that is not nessesary to furthering the evolution of drum corps. bawker
Yes, we have... :) ...and adding a valve was the initial step towards band instrumentation, IMO. ...which is fine, as it's band instrumentation as it relates to only bell-front brass and percussion. Adding the valve...then the slipslide...rotor....2nd valve....3rd valve....multi key....these steps all took drum corps brass to where we are today...band brass. Similar things happened to percussion....adding WW is not a big deal to me to finish out the change that started decades ago.

torn8o
MikeD, why is it that both drum corps and summer band can't just co-exist in seperate arenas? Why is it a MUST that DCI change over to band and kill the idom of drum corps? WHY?

Drum corps is brass and percussion, even if it is band brass and concert percussion. It will take nothing short of a monumental effort by many more than Hop and Gibbs to change that. DCI's website: Now for those key differences. There are no woodwinds (clarinets, flutes, etc.) in drum corps, and a few of the brass instruments are constructed slightly differently from those you’d see on a local football field on a Friday night in the fall ("Key" differences. Hee hee! :P)

Lance
Nope, he believes it. And it's a heck of a lot more constructive than "drum corps today sucks" posts. Even if you disagree with him, Mike at least invites discussion.
MikeD
Do you really believe all this stuff you post or do you really enjoy playing devil's advocate??? Yes, I believe it. I also love drum corps as it exists. These are just my opinions...I don't expect anyone else to agree.
