Sideways
Magic '02 was essentially a brand new corps.
AzEuph
When did Div. II/III come around? Because I think for this day in the activity to get to Div. I and then make finals in 5 years is hard enough (5 years from first Div.I year)
kevingamin
When did Div. II/III come around? Because I think for this day in the activity to get to Div. I and then make finals in 5 years is hard enough (5 years from first Div.I year) Division II/III has been around for years and, before 1992, was known as Class A and Class A-60. Class A started out in 1975. Can't tell you about A-60 off the top of my head.
bssop97
I think the highest and youngest corps in Div. I is probably Capital Regiment. They've only been in for 3-4 years now? So if they make finals this year they could be added to that list! I would say Southwind too because they folded and came back I believe under Madison Scouts, but they were a corps before.......Then Mandrains coming in in 03(?) and placed 17th, not too bad. Not sure about the colts but for some reason I'm thinking they are older...... CR has been around since 99.
Matthew
Founded in 1958. Seattle Cascades beginning was in 1957 (but the corps was a different name at the time). I guess if you call each different name of the corps, the beginning could be 1957, 1964, 1966, or 1970... But the main idea of this corps began in 1957, with the Greenwood Boys Club Drum and Bugle Corps (all male corps) 1958: Seattle Thunderbirds 1964: Thunder Bird Cadets (merged with the A corps "Seattle Thunderbirds" in 1966--Cascade Cadets) 1970: Seattle Cascades

geluf
And I'd be very surprised to see a corps make up it to DIV. I in 5 years, forget about top 12! In the current drum corps and economic climate I just don't see that happening, unless there's a corporate sponsor on the scale of a Bill Cook. Capital Regiment. Founded 1999 Div. 1 status in 2003
Phantom&Phitch
hmm... is it possible? yes. Hard though? def. I think a corps would need to have such low tour fees that it would attract top talent from top 12 corps, and also a high payroll for staff. ssorrell
What's interesting now is most of those corps you mentioned started out as a div. 1 corp. You don't see that today. Most starting out corps are div. II or III. Corps that are in the 12-24 placement corps are former div. II/III corps that moved up to div. I. The last corp that was built as a div. I corp was Magic. That's because NO corps today can form and immediately join Division 1. They have to go through Div 2 and/or 3 FIRST. Back in previous decades, a corps could join any division, based on the number of members in the corps I believe. So if a corps started out with 100+ members, they could join Div 1...but today they couldn't do that. PR_ducky
Sure it's possible. Like most things, just throw enough money at the problem and I am sure a corps could do it. There isn't a Jr corps in Atlanta these days. if a corporation came in and provided all the sponsorship and facilities I am sure a new corps in Atlanta could replicate Spirit's success. There are so many High Schools and Colleges in the area it would be a snap to find the talent. BUT, it all boils down to the cash. Cash for supplies Cash for facility Cash for design team..... Most corps start small and grow because the money just isn't there.
