performances to show a non-fan

Recommended Posts

Over the years, there have been several posts about "what single DCI show would you let a non-fan view to get them interested in drum corps?"

How about doing this for every corps? I'm restricting mine to the top 12 plus a couple. And this isn't necessarily "what is your favorite show from corps X?" it's "what show from corps X would you show to an initiated person to get them hyped about drum corps?"

Blue Devils - 1994

Blue Knights - 2000

Bluecoats - 2002

Boston Crusaders - 2000

Cadets - 1995

Carolina Crown - 2005

Cavaliers - 2004

Colts - 1993

Crossmen - 2001

Glassmen - 2002

Magic - 2002

Madison Scouts - 1997

Phantom Regiment - 2005

Santa Clara Vanguard - 2004

I found myself breaking a tie with the newer show. For instance, I considered theatrical stuff like 1991 and 2004 from SCV, but I'd want to show somebody a newer show.

Blue Devils - 1988

Blue Knights - 1993

Bluecoats - 1987 (!)

Boston Crusaders - I do not know the new BAC well enough. Sub in a year with Conquest!

Cadets - 1984

Carolina Crown -Healthy Scratch for Bridgemen 1983

Cavaliers - 1990

Colts - Healthy Scratch for Freelancers 1983

Crossmen - 2006

Glassmen - Healthy Scratch for Troopers 1986

Magic - Healthy Scratch for Suncoast Sound 1984

Madison Scouts - 1995

Phantom Regiment - 1989

Santa Clara Vanguard - 1991

add: Velvet Knights 1988

add: Spirit of Atlanta 1986 or 1980

add: 27th Lancers 1980

add: Sky Ryders 1986

add: Glassmen 2006

and...

add: Star 85, 88

(I think I'm stuck in the 80's....)

I understand that these may not be the most "difficult/well-executed/insert superlative here", but IMO these shows really appealed to the person who didn't really know a lot about DCI, but knew enough about music to make a connection with many of these shows.

Just my 2 very inconsequential cents... :)

As an "Old Fart" on here I'm going to dug into the archives and chose the following:

Blue Devils 1992 (When A man Loves a woman)

Bluecoats 2006 (Nothing like the present here!!)

Cadets 1989 (Lemiserable - a classic)

Santa Clara 1988 (Phantom - A great show)

Phantom Regiment 1991 (truly one of the best shows NEVER to win )

Madison Scouts 1988 ( A powerful horn line will get anyones attention )

Velvet Knights 1992 (true showmanship and entertaining - we need more of these )

Star of Indiana 1991 (One of the very best championship shows EVER )

Dutch Boy 1990 (Franky and Sammy - One of the best Canadian corps to ever cross the border)

Oakland Crusaders 1976 ( driving through the whole show )

These are my all time favorites so I hope they will be enjoyed by whoever watches them !!! B)

SCV '87 - this elicited an actual ovation from an old housemate of mine... just him and me watching a tape of the show late at night. He spontaneously broke into applause at the end (he had never seen or heard a DCI show before).

Cavaliers '04 - familiar thematic material, signature Cavvies knock-your-eyes-out drill moves - a good example of the current state of the art for a novice (or anyone else, for that matter...)

Phantom '89 - New World is famiiar music to a lot of novices, and exposing a newbie to what Phantom did with it that year is a great way to present an example of that special "something" that is arrived at every now and then when great aspects of a Drum Corps performance come together at the same time.

Madison '05 - it's got the Madison screamers... it's got the GE... it's got the girl.

Cadets 2000 - many chills down (or is t up?) the spine moments - for some reason, this music and The Cadets' interpretation and perfomance of it just does it for me. The solo sections serve as an example of innovaton at it's best (TASTEFUL innovation, that is...)

Crown '04 - if you're initiating a novice, there's no sense trying to hide the fact that a comtemporary DCI show is likely to use amplification. I know a lot of people don't like it, but in my opinion, the singers in this show were extremely talented - gun to my head, if I had to pick one "amped" show, this one wins hands down. Plus, everyone knows Bohemian Rhapsody...

Bridgemen '80 - the cheese factor in this show rises exponentially as time goes by, but woe to him who can't bring himself to break a smile at some of the antics in this show. Gets bonus points for being a showcase for one of the greatest drumlines of all time. War Between the States (or were they calling it Civil War Suite that year - I forget...) can be pointed to as an enduring drum corps classic.

SCV '03 - any initiation of a novice must include exposure to a Jim Casella drum book.

Spirit '80 - again, a great combination of entertainment, overall talent, and some iconic DCI tunes.

Star '92 - familiar patriotic music (with a few twists to keep it interesting), and some drop-dead gorgeous integration of visual presentation along with it - all executed by an outfit oozing with talent in all departments.
