High School Bands Attempting to do Drum Corps!

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the compliments... Glad you liked the show! And no, there is no Mr. Moto since the show isn't Moto Perpetuo, just the same music...

But Aaron, your HS is at an advantage to where you have a large, large group of winds that can actually pull off playing a drumcorps' horn book. :P

Goodluck at the up coming contest season, I'm sure y'all will do great like ususal.

i liked watching it too. it also makes me jealous seeing a band that big. cause the band i work with is MAYBE 1/4 that size if we're lucky. I don't mind workin with a band of the size that i work with, but sucks because they all aren't willing to work. And i also think it'd be cool to work with a big band.

but i think it was austin that played appalachian springs....good stuff!

Ya, I am pretty lucky to have attended and work with a band that is that large... It has it's pros and cons though...

PROS- HUGE brass section... Larger than a corps' even...We had something like 79 brass last year I think, and we are LOUD LOUD LOUD in a good way... (The only reason I know we have 79 is because they did that box x thing the cavies do, and I know that there are 65 people in that block, plus we have 14 tubas, so ya... lol) We have AMAZING directors who have been there a LONG time... You can pull a LOT more talent from the middle schools/junior highs that way since more kids see the marching band and say "Hey, that's COOL! I wanna do that!" Then they get their friends involved... Then we have AMAZING band directors at the junior high levels also who make the kids WANT to stay in band, resulting in a MASSIVE band program...

CONS- How we stay successful is a mystery to me... Tradition has a lot to do with pushing the kids... We've never made below a Superior rating at UIL, and I'm sure we'll get another one this weekend... The kids KNOW that, and push themselves to get there... The downside of that same tradition is that the kids kinda have a ceiling on how hard they push themselves... For instance, we've never scored above 5th place at any BOA regional... (We've won captions, but never placed...) Lately, we've scored 7th place a lot, and the kids have decided that we are a 7th place band, and are fine with that regardless of how hard we push them... (I have had to get on their case about that more than once... ugh...) Also, due to the way we do things with our marching program, we sometimes don't hit all the right spots with judges and have missed finals at UIL State Marching the last couple of years... BUT, we've also made it that far only a handful of times in the school's history.... (That should tell you how incredibly hard our region/area is to get out of, cuz I KNOW we are not bad...SHEESH!!) Also, size has a lot to do with how clean we can get... We have 4 full-time band directors... (sorta... 1 does percussion, 1 does colorguard, and 2 are band only) Then there's me, I tech on Tuesday nights (our long rehearsal), and the junior high band director comes out too... SO, with approx. 300 kids running around the field, that means about a 50/1 ratio... One director is always up top, and the two specialists see to their sections... So that really leaves about 3-4 people working drill/music... They are some of the most intense/fun times I've EVER had... I RUN from section to section spouting out corrections/observations/jokes/whatever... It's crazy fun, but you can never get to everyone and so you just have to do your best... Luckily, the kids are incredibly talented and well informed, therefore they do their jobs about 95% of the time... The other 5% is wasted on talking (another byproduct of size) and just goofing off...

All in all... The lessons learned from teching is that the entire band is one HUGE family... Everyone likes everyone... We have fun, we goof off, we work hard... It's really a great balance... I have to give it up to the directors... They really understand what it's all about... Competitive success is a byproduct of the great times we have in rehearsal... We're not striving for "Win or failure"... It's "have a great time, learn something, make friends, and if we are successful, even better..." I think that philosophy is why the band has been consistently successful and had large numbers since the opening of the school.....

Am I ot? lol...

PS: There SHOULD be a new video of them tomorrow... Hopefully we'll get a lot done tonight... Contest this weekend! AHH!!!

Personally, I don't care if someone does the same PIECES as a drum corps show, but I hate to see a verbatim transcription of a show. Regardless of how well it's done, it just won't compare to the original. And, why would you want to re-do something someone else already has done? I just don't get that.

AMEN GLENN! It's NOT a compliment for a lazy drill designer to rip off "dot for dot" another drill designer's work. You can be inspired all you want. You can back engineer all you want. You can try to "think what the designer was thinking" all you want. But if you want to be a true DRILL DESIGNER, figure it out yourself and come up with your own stuff. That irks me to no end...

I have several thoughts here...

first of all there are way too many of "old school" guys and girls out here that spew hate onto marching bands. I get it no one can replace the wonderful musical sounds of the old drum corps with the G-bugles. Woodwinds are bad. whatever...its time to get over yourselves. regardless of what kids are playing they are still going out and giving it their all.

Secondly I think DCI is much like and pro sports league...you like your one drum corps and thats it. no respect for the rest of the art form. I am not just talking about the dissing on marching bands but lack of respect for Div 2/3. I can hear the comments already..."I'm sure there are a few good groups down there, but There is nothing like a Div 1 corps." Yeah i think some Revolution, Jersey Surf, Oregon Crusaders, ECJ, Impulse or Spartan members might just laugh in your face.

Finally, If you guys can say that marching bands cant play drum corps shows I can very easily make the argument that I havent heard any REAL jazz in DCI in Many years.

off the soapbox so the rest of you can continue the hate...

edited for spelling

here'sa thought I don't think has been mentioned yet.....Let's say the Copy Corps High School Marching band steals a show from some drum corps......will they do it as well as that corps? probalby not, BUT, consider this...not ALL BANDS go to BOA national championships...some bands are in podunk circuits where MOST people don't follow drum corps. Add to that the population of high school students that see their half time show at a football game..how many of THEM do you think watch the show and say "Hey, this isn't anywher eNEAR as good as when vanguard did it".......but they MAY say "hey, this is a pretty cool show...better than last year (when teh band did Hal Leonard Marching band arrangements).....so it COULD be that the goal is NOT to out cavalier the cavaliers, but to simply be a REALLY good high school band......

Best post yet in this thread, Stu, just beating out the one above you. Some high school bands are #### good, and at the forefront of the activity. Others... aren't. So if your school can't afford to hire a top-notch drill designer, can't get someone to arrange an original horn book, or can't commission a new uniform from FJM, what do you do? You provide a valuable and educational experience to your kids hte best way you know how, and if that involves using what's already out there, so be it.

The purpose of a semi- or non-competitive marching band is much different than the purpose of a highly competitive drum corps. Honestly I wonder why this is such a big deal to some. You would never see a highly competitive BOA band exactly copy a corps, excepting some similarities between programs with the same designers. Heck, sometime a band can take what a corps has performed, and even do it better. ^0^

Haha. I get the same thing here in Angleton, Aaron. I have a Santa Clara Vanguard decal on the back of my car and people always ask me what that is.

By the way, about a year or so ago...I saw a vehicle (can't remember what kind) with a SCV bumper sticker in Lake Jackson. Maybe it was your parents car?? (There was a lady driving.)

I literally flipped out!
