1. 1987 Garfield Cadets - Too revolutionary of a show not to win. I know many people think it shouldn't have even been tops in its year, but this was one hell of a show performed #### near perfection. And yes, there was a dropped stick. We know.

2. 1989 SCV - Same could be said about '89 SCV. I think it being the second year for this show drops it down a notch, as it wasn't quite as "cutting edge" as '87 Cadets.

3. 1999 Blue Devils - Some may be surprised by the high placement I've given this show, but I'm one of those people that doesn't even understand how SCV caught them. Amazing brass line playing an amazing book on old horns from the early 90's, and they move amazingly well.

4. 2000 Cavaliers - This show is well-designed and well-performed, but it always bores me.

5. 1993 Phantom Regiment - Though '93 Regiment is clearly more exciting than '00 Cavies, it's definitely not as clean, and the judges would reward it as such. Still a bad*** show though.

6. 1992 Crossmen - Great drumline, awesome solo.

7. 2003 Madison Scouts - My favorite Scouts show since 99, and a great return to finals for Madison.

8. 1989 Star of Indiana - The last year before Star's "epic" shows from 90-93. It's just not as memorable for me as those.

9. 2003 Boston Crusaders - Rehashing of a lot of corps standards, done pretty well.

10. 2006 Carolina Crown - Great hornline, bad drum book, exciting show. Visual is a little weak.

11. 1987 SkyRyders - Great concept (repeated by Kiwanis in '04).

12. 1990 Dutchboy - Dutch Boy's only finals appearance, overshadowed by the rest of the great shows here (not that it is a bad show, by any stretch).

Percussion: Cadets '87

Brass: '99 BD

GE Vis: '00 Cavies

GE Mus: '87 Cadets

Vis. Perf.: '99 BD

Guard: '99 BD

Spirit of Disney: '89 SCV

Another really tough list, so here it goes.

First I will start with captions because I had to think about these first in order to determine in my mind how this might have played out.

Top 5 in each caption:

High Brass - 1. BD 99, 2. Garfield 87, 3. Phantom 93, 4. SCV 89, 5. Cavaliers 2000

High Percussion - 1. Garfield 87 and SCV 89, 3. Blue Devils 99, 4. Cavaliers 2000, 5. Crossmen 92

High Guard - 1. BD 99, 2. Garfield 87, 3. Cavaliers 2000, 4. SCV 89, 5. Star of Indiana 89

Visual Ensemble - 1. Cavaliers 2000 and BD 99, 3. Phantom 93, 4. Garfield 87, 5. SCV 89 (not their cleanest marching)

Visual GE - 1. Garfield 87 (the definition of visual GE), 2. Cavaliers 2000, 3. SCV 89, 4. Phantom 93, 5. BD 99

Music GE - 1. Garfield 87 and SCV 89, 3. BD 99, 4. Phantom 93, 5. Crossmen 92

And now...

1. Garfield 1987 (avg. caption placement of 1.8)

2. Blue Devils 1999 (avg. caption placement of 2.3)

3. Santa Clara Vanguard (avg. caption placement of 3)

4. Cavaliers 2000 (avg. caption placement of 3.5)

5. Phantom Regiment (avg. caption placement of 4.3)

6. Star of Indiana 1989

7. Crossmen 1992

8. Carolina Crown 2006

9. Boston Crusaders 2003

10. Sky Ryders 1987

11. Madison Scouts 2003

12. Dutchboy 1990

The bottom 7 corps were simply decided by both caption and gut instinct. Garfield wins a close one over BD here, and although one can see this lineup coming out a number of different ways, here is how I rationalized my rankings.

Of all these shows, Garfield 87 stands as perhaps the most significant in terms of design and GE. Now, that doesn't mean it's the best, but when you look at how well they performed on old, crappy G's of the day, the artistry and musicianship in that show, the demand and polish of their brass line, the ground-breaking visual design (which holds up to this very day), and a magnificent drum line despite the controversy over their drum title, and what you have is a show for ALL ages. Perhaps this show doesn't best a field of Cavaliers 2002, Cadets 2005, Star 93, BD 94, etc., but I feel it bests this field.

Initially, I would have put SCV 89 in a close 2nd, but when I broke down the captions BD simply came out higher. With the exceptin of drums, you can make a good case the BD would have beaten SCV 89 in brass, guard, visual ensemble, and music ensemble (which I did not include in my captions for the sake of simplicity).

All these shows were great. I still remember hearing the phenominal soprano soloist with Dutchboy in 1990. What a player. The Sky Ryders 1987 West Side Story show is perhaps the 2nd best adaption of this music for field EVER, and their rendition of Officer Krupke is the BEST I have ever seen. The only show on the board with the visual prowess and significance as 1987 Garfield is 2000 Cavaliers, and it is the 2000 Cavaliers show that is one of the hallmarks today for GE Visual. SCV's visual was stunning as well, but too many ideas from their 1988 production were incorporated in 1989, giving their 89 show just a slight less significance in terms of visual and GE, although it was performed amazingly well and helped them win a hard fought title over Phantom 89. But I liked their 1988 version of Phantom of the Opera better. You could make a case for Crossmen 1992 over Star of Indiana 1989. I had Crossmen in 5th in two captions (percussion and music GE), but they lag just a bit further back of Star in brass, guard, and visual ensemble.

Enjoy,

JW
