I'm not sure that the alumni corps should compete.

But let's imagine how it could work.

You give a ballot paper to each fan at the gate at the end of the Alumni show or when he is going out of the stadium.

He fills it and put it in the box.

The results and awards are given Sunday night at the end of the DCA competition.

I think I was misunderstood...

I was mentioning ways that you could pick the alumni corps that would be seen AT DCA weekend....

Have a few shows throughout the season that people would vote for the best alumni corps and that would qualify them to go to DCA weekend....

It's not competing in a sense, the corps goes out and they do what they do.... the fans then give their opinions and a "winner" is chosen.

As for DCA weekend... I would still keep that as the "Exhibition of the best Alumni Corps Voted By YOU the Fans"

Personally, I don't see competitive alumni corps even as a possibility. One of the main things that allows us to have the members that we do is having such a 'light' schedule for both practice and shows. By competing, a corps would would simply have to increase the number of practices, which in turn would cost the corps members because alot of people couldn't make it as often as would then be needed.

How often do the Bridgemen practice during the year ?

How often do the Bridgemen practice during the year ?

In October we have our celebration of the past season then we start rehearsing the new material once a month from November through April. In early May we usually have a two day camp to learn the drill and another one day rehearsal later in the month to fine tune it.

Our first show is the Tournamnet of Stars (which we sponsor) around the third weekend of June and then we book four more shows during the summer. This year we're at Allentown, Wildwood, Kingston NY, and the DCI Alumni Spectacular in Rochester.

So we have eight rehearsals during the "winter" and five rehearsals during the summer. But each summer rehearsal is either on the day of our shows or sometimes (as in Allentown, where the show was on Sunday) we get a chance to rehearse the day before. So we pretty much only get together about 13 times during the year although we typically also do two parades in Bayonne as well.

This year we actually scheduled several of our "winter" rehearsals the same day as our indoor concerts at Reading and at Harrisburg. The corps has decided we are in this for fun and if we had too many rehearsals or other engagements it might become a drag. We have members who travel in from 13 different states (and one province) so it would be hard to schedule any more rehersal time in any event.

The secret is FOCUS! We try very hard to get full value out of each and every rehearsal. The FUN comes when we enjoy the crowd's reaction a la Allentown, July 8.

Count me as another person who does not want to see Alumni Corps compete. I don't even feel comfortable with the voting for most entertaining corps at the DCA Alumni Spectacular, despite last year's results.

As many have said, we go out and play for the fun of it and to entertain the crowd. If it starts to become competitive, it will become much too serious and the fun factor will diminish.

Let us have our 'fun' and leave the contests to the young guns!

I have to agree with Smitty here, in that alumni corps shouldn't compete. That isn't why they exist.

But..... Having been involved with an alumni corps for the past several years, there hasn't been a rehearsal or a show in which people haven't driven themselves to be "just a little bit better." There's an innate sense of competition in all of us - probably one of the reasons we got into drum corps in the first place - that says, "Let's go out and entertain the hell out of the audience and show them that we're the best alumni corps out there."

So competition is certainly there - be it conscious or subconscious. To actually rank units and award placements, however, would place inordinate demands upon the participants - very possibly ending some alumni corps.

I think our future (that of alumni corps) lies more in the direction of all-alumni shows - like Glens Falls and the Alumni Spectacular. The audience can make all the comparisons they want, and we can walk away saying, "Well I guess we showed them!"

right on Andy,.....................these shows could go into communities that cannot afford to put on a full blown contest, and promote the overall activity of corps,............

Gary,

doesn't it cost just as much to bring in alumni corps' to these contests?

I guess there is a savings in not having a panel, but would that make a difference?
