euponitone
Me too. Hysterically, I might add.Seriously, in what universe would world class educators and show designers take advice from an inexperienced 15 (at least I assume he's 15 from his posts and the "if I complain enough about it it will go away" mentality) year old? Hey man, im pretty sure he's like...18. And we all know 18 is THE BEST AGE EVER.... DONT RUIN IT BY TURNING 19 !!!!!!!!!!!! :P

Liam
Well, it seems that the narration will officially be used throughout the closer. Luckily, I am well on my way on a summer campaign in which I will do everything in my power to try to ensure that the narration be removed from the show. First, a friend and I have constructed a banner that reads CAROLINA CROWN: YOUR SHOW IS GLORIOUS, SPEC- TACULAR, AND BEAUTIFUL, NO NARRATION NECESSARY on 16 by 7 sheets of paper, which we will be waving during Saturday night's Atlanta Brass Classic. Hopefully the performers will be able to notice the message and realize that there is a serious issue and possibly relay it to the staff members. Also, one year Crown performers were in the stands after the show. If this is the case this year, we will show the banner to them and ask those who support our endeavor to sign it, then give it to one of them to take back with them on tour. Well, go ahead and have some fun with your cute little banner ..... ....but do not -- I repeat, DO NOT -- obstruct my view of ANY corps performances while doing so ..... Tone Quality Matters
I think it's pretty obvious how I feel... Have you seen Crown or Cadets perform this Summer? Sorry, you are wrong again. Neither show needs a crutch, this much is certain.

There are many reasons to dislike narration in the cadets show, and in crowns show, should it occur. Narration being a crutch is not one of them. Nice picture though... GlassFan
I have heard both shows...and they sound wonderful! Their hornlines are superb and the musicianship is unprecedented...however when you need someone to tell you what is going on in the show or to help invoke emotion...that my friend is a crutch. No more of a crutch than holding a banner on the field for everyone to read.
euponitone
I have heard both shows...and they sound wonderful! Their hornlines are superb and the musicianship is unprecedented...however when you need someone to tell you what is going on in the show or to help invoke emotion...that my friend is a crutch. I'm guessing you havent been reading much lately, as this issue has been beaten to death. Narration is only a crutch if it is added after the fact, or because the marching and playing couldnt get the idea across. I cant speak for crown, but the cadets show concept is based on a RADIO SHOW, involving the reading of ESSAYS. Unfortunately for you, narration was a part of their thought process from the beginning, as an integral part of the show design. The problem with people calling narration a crutch is that they define 'crutch' their own terms. I could just as easily say that playing with 3 valves is a crutch, as we did fine with 2 for so many years. You may counter that the 3 valved horn was a natural change, and is not a crutch, but again, that is simply your opinion. One must be careful when crtisizing something to make sure that they are sure to differentiate what they dont like, from what it wrong or a sign of weakness. For example, I dont like the narration that says 'we are human beings, we are a team'. I think its cheesy to the point where even a high school kid would balk at it. Is it a crutch though...i dont think so; just poorly done. Now i can say i dont like that, without calling it something it's not, which is a lesson i feel many here need to learn Edited June 22, 2007 by euponitone
