Bydloyoho Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 You know what I mean, some shows that just lack that special something that, say, Phantom 08 or SCV 89 have. I'm thinking here of something like Cavies 97 for example. The show just didn't have....it......y'know...IT and felt a little flat. I blame the music arrangement personally - it had brilliant moments but didn't work for me overall. I'm not sure I can quite express exactly why though. I'm wondering if people have shows they dislike from corps they love. Quote

Compare that with Regiment's 86/06 closer (I forget the name of the piece)....86 ick....06 redemption. Quote
Jared_mello Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 i'll start, cadets 94. 06 is an obvious choice, and i guess most of 08 too. Quote

ZealJ03 Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 (edited) 1990-1993 Blue Devils - Phenomenal music, but the visual program was so far behind in terms of creativity to what Cadets, Star, SCV, and the Cavaliers were putting out, that it really almost took away from the show 1994 Cadets - West Side Story with a Medea perspective does not happen for me. I'm very glad they didn't take the 1983 approach 1996 Cadets - Love the music, some of the best, overall show just... wasn't there for me 1997 Cavaliers - Maybe cus it wasn't their style... 1997 Blue Devils - Clean, performed great, besides A Night in Tunisia, I think the rest of the program was just flat. 2002 Cadets - Great music, but it was so poorly performed for me finals night, it just looked like a disaster everywhere. I can't get the blow ups out my head when I think about the show 2005 Blue Devils - Great Corps, getting a feel for the theme? Not there 2006 Cadets - Great music, great drill, good moments, baaad continuity. 2007 Cavaliers - It was cute, but the program just lacked a vibe 2008 Carolina Crown- I loved it for a while. I don't know but the concept was not starkly expressed, it just ended up being 3 tunes that was over shadowed by corps that played, moved, and expressed it better. Oh yeah... 2007 Blue Devils - Apart from the phenomenal opener, I still don't know how this corps racked up GE. I don't know what the show's even really about. It was followed by a chord progression ballad and an incredibly lackluster closer. I don't know how they won, I don't even think they marched, played, or spun anything incredibly challenging or executed it well. I'm kind of baffled that they won. 2ndSop4Life Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Madison 07. Still doesn't do it for me. Quote
tommytimp Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Blue Devils, 1998. Because nothing says "Classic Blue Devils" like show tunes and Russian ballet. Just baffling. Quote
Bob984 Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 I think many corps "miss the boat" when it comes to the quality and effectiveness of their musical arrangements. The good news is that a few corps are also managing to hit "home runs" when it comes to that. Even sadder, is that this does not necessarily show up in the scores, especially the effect captions, which remains a concern. Also, before you "flame", I am not a visual person.....ie if it doesn't do it for me musically, there's nothing the visual package can do to change that for me, although I know others who go ga-ga over programs with visual emphasis..... For this year's finalists Fabulous: Phantom, Crown Good: SCV, Cadets, Bluecoats, Blue Stars The rest of the shows were performed well, and I respect those corps, but I felt needed more to make their musical programs better... chaddyt Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Cadets 08 - As much as I love this corps, I just found their show to be flat this year. Cadets 06 - Only thing I really liked was the ballad. BD 05 - Interesting concept, but... that's all it was. Cavies 07 - I really liked that they tried something different, but it was pretty obvious they were outside their comfort zone. Quote
