Bob984 Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Ok, so there is a blizzard going on, so I am a bit bored........ When will be the next "wide open" competitive year in DCI? How do I define "wide open"? I would consider a "wide open" year to be one when...... (1) nobody goes undefeated (2) several corps at the top have beaten each other (3) there is no "clear cut" favorite (4) there are more than 2 corps who have a real chance at the title I like seasons like this, but it's been awhile. At least in 2008, a "non-favorite" came from behind with a great, crowd-pleasing show to eek out a win.............. I think it would be outrageous if we went into finals week with 5 or 6 corps with a real shot at it, and scores as tight as can be. We have had some real "wide open" battles for making finals, though. GB Quote

Lance Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 When was the last year to meet all of those criteria? 1991? No matter what, it rarely happens. Quote
Rimba47 Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 Well, Crown and Cadets kind of had a pretty intense rivalry in 2009. They were constantly at each other’s throats score wise and they both beat each other throughout the season; it was like this all the way to finals night. A similar thing happened between Blue Stars, Phantom, and Boston. IT was really up in the air who would pull through!! So, while the heat wasn't necessarily for first place it was still there in general and VERY exciting. I'm sure there were similar situations where people were REALLY split between which corps would beat out another come finals night. But the "wide open" season you’re talking would be near impossible simply for the reason that corps always go up and down in their quality/ show design. Maybe if all the corps reached their peak at the same time? Quote
DrillmanSop06 Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 The interesting race is never for the championship, in my most cases. The most exciting battles are the corps on the bubble. When there are a good handful of corps who could clinch a finals spot in a single season, that's heat! Quote
AdamP Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 The way I see it, it's like that every season. Sadly, just not for the title. There are so many corps that I can't really see even being out of the top three this year. All of the higher placing corps from 09 all have very good motivation to go crazy for the title this year, and as doubtful as it is; this year has a pretty good chance of being wide open in my eyes. But as for the possibility that " 5 or 6 Corps" have a shot at the title come Finals Week, I'd say that's pretty much in the impossible realm. There has never been a time in DCI that more than 4 Corps have had a legitimate shot of winning by the time the Corps busses arive in the parking lot for Quarters. By the time the Corps all arrive, the narrowing of the field has already taken place, so that about 2-4 Corps in any given year have a " real shot at it " ( Title ) Edited February 7, 2010 by BRASSO Quote

Maybe if all the corps reached their peak at the same time? Sorry, 2009 was NOTHING like a super competitive year. BD was undefeated all the way through. This was nothing like '91, which was mentioned before, or '90 when 5 or 6 corps had a legitimate shot at winning finals. Quote
contrajedi8 Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 Never. BD is always going to be the favorite. Quote
