General Effect 1 & 2?

Recommended Posts

I saw in the Rockford and Clovis recaps that we now have "General Effect 1" and "General Effect 2" captions, rather than visual and music effect. I assume this is from the change to effect judging announced over the winter. For someone in the know...

1) Are there two different sheets used for GE1 and GE2 (like for Percussion 1 and Percussion 2 a few years back), or is it two judges working from the same sheet?

2) Anyone have a link to the actual GE sheets being used for 2014?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Music Effect and Visual Effect captions were done away with and replaced with more of an "overall effect" philosophy towards judging the product.

I believe this is correct however:

1. The Indy show had GE Music and GE VIS captions

2. I believe the overall GE caption will be judged by two judges - one with a vis specialty, and one with a music specialty. Of course the Ge judges who are Vis specialists but also musicians/band directors will likely be most effective (better than, say, guard people with little/no music training or music people with little vis expertise).

This is new this year, and I'll be curious to see how it works out

Yes, it will be interesting. Being more of a "music guy", when I hear overall effect tapes made by visual-specialist folks who are not also musicians at band shows we attend, there are sometimes quite cringe-worthy comments being made about the music.

This however is in keeping however with what I've been saying for quite awhile now.... the Visual captions, are the predominant captions on the current judging sheets. For example, you can win a DCI Title if one of your musical intstrument playing captions ( say Percussion ) is not in the top 4 or 5, but you are SOOL if you have a Visual ( or Guard )... (non musical captions).... that is not in the top 3 or 4. For a specific example of this of late, there's no way in the world that Carolina Crown could have won their DCI Title last season if it was one of the non musical playing playing Visual captions ( including Guard ) that finished in 6th place, instead of their musical playing Percussion section that finished in 6th place.

Mike: The sheets really wont make much of a difference. All it does is give a green light for visual to talk music ( as it relates ) and vice versa. This has been done all along with all the crossover captions and how they relate. NOW it just gives permission to really talk about it. There wont make any difference at all I believe. So, youre just going to hear the same...just more of what you say.

In a nutshell, yes.. you are correct.

What is fundamentally new as an alleged change is that judges are allowed.. even encouraged now... to comment of things they like or don't like in a discipline that is not in their specific judging caption for that day. For example, a Percussion judge can comment on a specific visual impact moment if he or she belives it was effective in the Percussion.

Judges have been encouraged now to look a little more holistically ( more than in the past now anyway ) at the show, and its design and its communication abilities as well. For example, the word they will be using more frequently now ( allegedly anyway ) is " Compelling ". They are still encouraged to look for freshness, and creativity ( as before ) But now, they will be asked, when the show, and its theme, is finished in competition that day, how " compelling " was it ? Now of course, " compelling " is a purely subjective phrase, and each judge's definition of " compelling " can be quite different. But the GE judges now are being asked ..." did the theme the Corps chose for itself communicate what it set out to communicate in a " fresh, new, and compelling " manner in the end ?

Anyway, hope this helps on some allegedly new nuances that will be incorporated into the judging system here for the 2014 season.

I really think they need to stick to more objective things while judging, such as cleanliness and marching on the right foot in tandem, posture, etc.

50% of the score should be judged on non-music things, in fact it would be better if those judges could not hear the music while judging.

GE is over rated and only gives judges an excuse to quasi-slot corps.

If they REALLY wanted to gauge "general effect", then they need to go to the fans to find out whose shows were more effective. Seriously, the fans know more about what's entertaining and what fits than the judges. But no, they don't care about that, they want an excuse to have as much impact on the score as possible, with subjective things that no one can argue against.
