  1. Hmmm, what hasn't been mentioned: Phantom Regiment 1978 (flight of the bumblebee); 1979 (march of the dwarfs)- any drum feature that ends in a Rockford File deserves to be on the list. Madison 1976 (Get on down the road) 27th Lancers 1979 (Take 5) - with rifles on the 50, flags on either side.... flag toss over the rifle line
  2. So.....FF is relative? Versus something that can be quantitativly measured? I guess I thought FF was not a relative concept. As a piano player, I always thought that fortissimo is an absolute, not dependent on the piece of music you're playing. So, I guess I'll disagree with you on this one. Cavaliers shows being discussed didn't play at "max volume," and apparently that worked out very, very well for them. But in the context of this thread...I don't think they enter the conversation.
  3. If you weren't familiar with an organization, and the only thing you had to go by was their mission statement, and it said: Our mission is to inspire actual thought. What would you think that organization was? A marching arts organization? Umm.......No How far up your own arse are you when you think your 11 minute drum corps show is striving to inspire actual thought? Pretty funny stuff.
  4. Why didn't I discover what a great show SCV 2010 was until about a week ago? Now I can't stop listening to it.
  5. It's so hard to pick a favorite, so, I'll go with the "what corps makes me tear up the most when they play their old favorites" judging system. In that case, it's the Troopers. Madison a very close second.
  6. I have no reason to doubt that you are absolutely correct. Yet, is it possible (I think it is) that more demanding does not equal more entertaining or more memorable? Harder does not always mean better. You can esoteric yourself into oblivion if no one appreciates it. I would not dismiss that either.
  7. Wait....there's singing in drum corps? Get outta here !!!!!
  8. "Best" is such a subjective term. Much as I would never besmirch anything having to do with the Madison Scouts... for me, there is one rifle line that stands above them. For that perfect combination of bad-azz attitude, technical excellence, best-ever rifle line uniform HANDS DOWN, the lying on their back spin move, and the fact they were 100 percent female.... I give you... THE 27TH LANCERS !!!! What year? Pick one, it doesn't matter.
  9. Maybe that's the OP's point..... if "style" means entertaining as heck, and "substance" means winning championships, then give me "style" 24/7. Many times, for me, "innovative" = booooring. I miss Scott Stewart's presence in the junior circuit. When I read, "Standing O's are fantastic, but...", I don't get it. I don't go to drum corps shows for intellectualism.
  10. Good luck with that. I'm sure their fleet of 30 year old Boston Whalers terrifies the US Navy.
  11. I learned to be humble and not brag about myself.
  12. '73 thru '78. Kinda fizzled with the departure of John Dietz. But today the marching band in Petoskey fields something like 250 kids - crazy big.
  13. Well......Cavies Did do several minutes of Tommy in 1974. Just sayin'
  14. So now you're changing your problem statement? You asked if DCI had any corps that are too big to fail, to which I replied "no." So now you want to ask if DCI could survive multiple corps failing? Or is it multiple corps leaving to form their own circuit? Or does your problem statement keep changing?
  15. Allright stop right there. Are you kidding me? I'm from Petoskey, Michigan. I was in the Midshipmen, and until this minute I was pretty sure no one had ever heard of them. It was a small town corps that competed locally mostly, started in the early '70's, and was gone by the late '70's. Wow.... what a thing this drum corps is.
  16. Oh yeah. How about an entire Rutter show?
  17. Boo, do you want to take this, or are we giving up on the apostrophe thing?
  18. Agree. If the Pirates show was symphonic, then I guess I don't know what symphonic is.
  19. Dear Has Been, Yes, you are correct. I have a fourth child to prove it. We were done with three. .....
  20. Not so fast my friend. Like Boo, I too have a peeve about misplaced apostrophes. Almost any word that ends in an "s" is a candidate for the misplaced apostrophe, it seems. I had a smarmy retort all typed up yesterday.....but, since it was Christmas, I deleted it. Boo, on the other hand, did hit the Add Reply button.
