  1. As a former student of Paul Rennick and many other instructors, I can honestly say that Paul Rennick is the smartest arranger and best educator in the marching percussion world today. His students aren't just good because they go to UNT, they are good because HE TEACHES them. Whether thats at UNT or Crown/PR/SCV. Not to mention, the Rennicks have put together the most talented staff in DCI, and it has been that was since the early PR days. The students are loyal to Paul because of how much they learn during a summer of marching one of his groups.
  2. Every Vet in both the pit and battery followed Paul to SCV. THere isn't a single vet at PR.
  3. Myron Rosander has announced on his facebook that because of his health he will not be able to write for phantom this summer. yikes
  4. Phantom 07... oh wait blue devils won. wtf. Cavies 00 or Phantom 2010.
  5. Paul and Sandi Rennick have found the winning formula at Phantom Regiment in my opinion. Every book since 2003 that they have written has been my favorite of the year. 2007 phantom regiment is the best percussion arranging this activity has every seen, IMO. I also really like Lee Beddis at times. His writing has always seemed kind of quirky, and I like it. 2009 though, was a little over the top with notes. Blue Devils have had a terrible book since like 2001. It is unmusical and too mathematical at times. Still have no idea how they won drums in 2007 or 2009. They play some absolutely FILTHY things in both of those shows. One of the most overated percussion section in DCI.
  6. I just listened to "new moon in the old moons arms," and I am officially pumped about 2010 pr. This is some of the most emotional music I have ever heard, My eyes swelled up in tears as I listened. I heard from a reliable source that the show is about the transmigration of souls into heaven. Sounds interesting. With the same amazing music staff from years past, and the addition of Myron Rosander and Mike Sloan to the visual design, I am excited. Cannot wait to see "Into the Light."
  7. The blue devils werent cleaner than everyone at every show. There were 4 percussion sections that I can think of that were better than devs in 09. Its just easy as a judge to follow everyone else and keep things in line with the other scores. Nobody wants to be the odd judge out. They were still good though, but as far as being impressive for getting a certain score, IMO the judging system is too flawed BTW, devs probably would have won in 2008 if they didn't get a "perfect" 20 in the visual caption the night before....They had no room to improve on the sheets, but had a ton of room to improve on the field, which they did, though the score couldnt go up. Oh well, at least the shows are fun to watch : )
  8. occasionally good brass and percussion? your crazy....Phantom's percussion hasn't been out of the top 5 since 2002, And has won twice in the past 4 years....
  9. Not sure where you heard this. Or if you are trying to make a joke. But this is not true.
  10. It does. Those are the composers of the music for the show
  11. yea but music ensemble also judges things life front to back timing, ensembles cohesvieness and things like that. Phantom and BD were clearly superior in music ensemble. Crown sounded great though, I like the sound better than both of the top two
  12. they wont have black pants... i promise... its white, the whole thing
  13. i have freinds in the corps.... they are playing some corigliano but it is only a tiny bit and not the musical focus at all. I have heard the other pieces they are playing, and some of it is pretty bizarre, and not at all what anyone is expecting, I promise.
  14. Technically demanding - no. Musically demanding? yes. The had to work to know just when to crescendo out of the ensemble and to go back down. Having played the orignal piece, I assure you that it was very difficult to make it sound the way its supposed to.
  15. We had best drumbreaks now lets hear best pit features. The intro to Phantom 2007 immediately comes to mind. Very captivating and beautiful. Phantom 2006 after the opener. The musical nuances are just amazing. Phantom 2005 pit accelarando. BD 2000 pit accelarando. One of the first pit featured moments and definately one of the most memorable. Phantom 2008 pit stuff with the mello solo. Just gorgeous. I think the way Paul Rennick and staff over at phantom are using the pit these days is remarkable. The pits at phantom are always extremely musical, and they are featured in the most musical contexts. What are your favorites?
  16. i heard from a person who was at camp that the uniforms are indeed white and nothing is really too different from last year. She did mention one change in particular but it doesnt really seem like a big deal to me as someone who was never in the corps.
  17. The blue devils percussion score cost them the world championship this season. Had they been a little bit closer to Phantom in drums they would have won.
  18. Regiment has multiple percussion camps in Texas, as well as Move ins. In fact, about 3/4's of the percussion section is from texas
  19. I was there at semifinals 2008 when the Phantom Regiment beat the Cavaliers for the first time ever in 12 years.
  20. Many students join a drum corps becuse they are music education majors, and they know the experience can help them get a job or help them in their job. They march a year or two and are done. Some march because they want to play in the best marching ensemble in the world. They march for a year or two and have a dvd to remember. (most) all age corps are not as good as (most) junior corps. Kids these days want top 12 or nothin it seems.
