  1. Forgive me. I didn't march. What exactly is a "movement" in drill ?
  2. My wife is a visiting nurse. She has to wear an N-95 when she visits a patient. Whenever she has to replace her N-95 it has to be "fitted" and then "tested" to make sure of the seal around her face. Breathing through a properly fitted N-95 can be, to say the least, a bit difficult. She has Asthma, so wearing the N-95 is even worse for her. She says that unless the N-95 is "fitted" properly ,its not much, if anymore effective, then a standard surgical mask. She also says almost everyone she sees with an N-95 "in public" isn't wearing it properly.
  3. In New Jersey we've seen an increase in positive test results. But hospitalizations and deaths have stayed low and don't show signs of increasing significantly. Last month my dad was having trouble breathing. We took him to the E.R. No covid test. His doctor said he had no signs of covid, so why would we do a test. Another doctor said that there's so much covid in the air, he's surprised when someone doesn't test positive. His philosophy, if you don't have symptoms, and no underlying health issues, you don't need to get tested.
  4. They've been in camp for what,5 days. No long bus rides, plenty of "floor time", if they're even sleeping on floors. I'd be more surprised if moral wasn't high.
  5. Boston Crusaders 2023 : "Paradise Regained " ?
  6. I thought the number was "officially" raised to 55. In fact, after DCI enacted the rule "encorps" announced they would no longer be fielding a competitive corps. There is a rumor that they may be trying to back in 2023.
  7. Tour Premiere is now up on Fathom's "Event" page. AMC Theaters
  8. Don't see any locations in North Jersey, where I live. AMC had a lot more locations. I also don't don't know how widespread "Regal " theaters are around the country.
  9. If I missed this, I apologize. Looking at DCI's Calendar and the Fathom Events June line up I don't see the Tour Premiere. Anyone know if it will be broadcast in theaters ?
  10. I agree 100% about certain arrangements. I'm not a music person. Would arrangements include "layering" ? Sometimes, to my untrained ears, layering makes it difficult to hear the song's melody.
  11. Your post was about shows that were designed to "draw in many more people who may not necessarily know what drum corps is . . . ". It wasn't about keeping things "fresh" for fans that already follow the activity. If you're talking about attracting people who aren't familiar with the activity, and who aren't music majors, you have give them music they can relate to.
  12. What would appeal to more people are shows that use "recognizable" music. 2021 showed what type of music can draw. A number of shows appeal to music majors, but not the general public. Things like "layering" may impress music aficionados. But when "layering" obscures the melodies, it gets lost on a lot of us.
  13. I disagree with this . Some corps, maybe. In other cases I think the show designers put together shows that they enjoy or that stroke their egos. If the fans don't appreciate or enjoy it, its because we're not sophisticated enough to understand their art.
  14. Staying O.T. One of the experiments in my chemistry set was getting the mercury out of mercurochrome. The chemistry set also had the "recipe" for balck powder (sulphur ,salt peter and charcoal). In high school we used Mercury in Physics class to study wave motions. Different world. Speaking of "Different World" : its a great song by Bucky Covington .
  15. Not exactly 100% same. But there's a story in northjersey.com about a former student at Tiger Schulmann in NJ suing over alleged sexual abuse by an instructor. What's unusual is that the suit is against the company and franchises where the instructor worked. But not against the instructor. Depending on the specifics of the suit, this could have ramifications for other abuse cases, including drum corps. Its an interesting read.
  16. I agree with the concept of changing the touring model. I disagree with "It just isn't going to work anymore in this day and age." As long as corps have enough MM ($$$$$) and staff to tour, and as long as DCI can keep selling tickets to their events, there's no reason to expect anything to change. Unless and until the corps and DCI feel a financial "pinch" it can, unfortunately ,continue to be "business as usual" .
  17. This just isn't true. You should read the report about the sexual assaults by Robert Strauss at Ohio State. He abused adult males, including football players and wrestlers. Same with Larry Nassar. His abuses at Michigan State weren't confined to minors. People can get intimidated by people in positions of authority. Who would think a D1 football player would be a victim of sexual abuse by a not exactly physically intimidating doctor ? I was a D1 wrestler. Reader's Digest condensed version: One off season I was working with an outside trainer. He was a former Marine Drill Instructor (at least that what he said). Over the course of a couple of weeks, my training sessions started to go from normal to "unusual ", including intimidation. I could see where things were headed, so I just stopped going. I was going to report him to the police, but I never knew his last name, and he stopped going to the track where I trained.
  18. That would be a policy that would be very easy for DCI to implement. Require every corps to give every MM, staff member a one page flyer saying something to the effect that : If you are, or even suspect you may be a victim of _______ ,call 911 and report it to the police, before you notify anyone else.
  19. With each passing day and new accusation, it is painfully obvious that, when it comes to Drum Corps and DCI, "the inmates are running the asylum". Again, without a true Governing Body with investigative and enforcement powers, including uniform penalties ,these kinds of things are going to keep happening. I also like the idea of restructuring to address the issues with the age differences with corps members.
  20. The point of my post was that, as "the only game in town" , DCI doesn't have any desire/incentive to be anything other then the event scheduler they currently are. As Mr. Ream said,2018 should have been a "wake up" call. But, obviously ,it wasn't. What happened at Pioneer, OC and now SoA, shows the status quo carried on. In my opinion. until DCI faces significant financial or legal consequences, there is no reason for the corps to give up power, and create a true Governing Body for the activity.
  21. Sorry, I wasn't clear. I thought it was the top 12 corps that "controlled" the organization.
  22. Again, this requires DCI to function as the organization's Governing Body. Something they don't seem to have any interest in. If they did function as a true governing body, they would establish mandatory, enforceable rules all corps must follow. As far as being on the same side, DCI's actions or inactions give the impression that, while they may, at times, talk a good game, DCI (the 12 corps) is unwilling to do the "heavy lifting" needed to address things like the SoA situation from happening again. There are several cliches that come to mind when it comes to how DCI handles difficult/controversial matters: Kick the can down the road Sweep it under the carpet. In my opinion unless/until DCI is in financial or or legal jeopardy, nothing is going to change.
  23. You hit the nail on the head. DCI is, as you said, an organization whose "policies emanate from the 12 individual member corps". The corps don't seem to have any interest in changing the status quo. Why should they ? When it comes to Drum Corps, they're the "only game in town", and they know it. DCI can't even put together a cooperative purchasing deal for non-perishables. A perfect example of DCI's ineffectiveness was last season's Covid Protocols. The disclaimers in the document showed that all DCI was doing was making "policies". Each corps was to deal/enforce them as they saw fit. Unless / until corps are willing to give up power (fat chance) and form a true independent Governing Body with investigative and enforcement power, as opposed to an event scheduler, nothing is going to change. As I said, why should they ?
  24. Biggest mistake by a cast member ? Donald Sutherland choosing to take a flat fee, instead of the 2% of the gross. He's said it cost him millions.
  25. Going to go O.T.: When I was in college several of the guys on my floor had 1 goal. Become a "Beta" (Beta,Theta,Pi). When they pledged, they spent all their time on their pledge duties. Forget classes. They all made it. But 3 out of 5 of them flunked out at the end of their Freshman year. My roommate pledged after that. He came back from pledge meetings bloody and covered in all kinds of crap (sometimes literal crap). He made it, but quit the Frat in his Junior year. He said he had had enough of making people "prove themselves worthy" of being a member.
