  1. Translation of the synopsis: It is a story of struggle . Self-defeating struggle . For the sake of a simple aspiration : realizing the 12 minutes that will be forever remembered them . A Marching Band Bontang are striving to become the champion of a major event : the Grand Prix Marching Band . Repeatedly failed to become the overall champion , a new coach named Rene eventually lead the Marching Band . Rene - coach - hard female character demanded they train hard for 12 months for the sake of 12 minutes in GPMB . Tara , Elaine , and Lahang is a member of the Marching Band . Three different child . Three characters and backgrounds . And three different problems . Tara had a pretty traumatic past and continues to haunt him . Elaine and Lahang intercepted conflict with their respective fathers . They conflict peaked just before leaving for Jakarta . All three have a strong enough reason to stop fighting and not to GPMB . So what did Rene , Tara , Elaine , and Lahang ? Did they beat themselves ? Did they realize that 12 minutes ?
  2. What if Spartacus had a Piper Cub?
  3. You saw the title of this thread, and you purposely decided to enter and read it. The offense you suffered is self-inflicted.
  4. I seem to recall that part of the business model for Star of Indiana was that it obtained a good deal of its funding form the Star bus lines. So a lot of the Star 'start up' money was actually to get the Star bus lines up and running, which then helped fund the corps after that point. Pretty clever.
  5. Not a 'brass guy' (nor even a 'brash guy') myself, but this has been asked before. I recall that knowledgeable people answered that the harmonics of the G and Bb/Eb instruments don't really mesh well together.
  6. So should color guard not count at all, since the words do not appear in "Drum and Bugle Corps"?
  7. Curious how many people who think that winning the title with a 6th place line that was down 0.55 in total score from the 1st place line, also think that the 2008 Blue Devils should have won with a 5th place line that was down 0.425 in total score from the 1st place line? If so, what is the acceptable A) Line placement, or B) Total score delta from the winning line, that is satisfactory for a 1st place corps?
  8. Of course, there is one corps that competes with BD on the West Coast every year, but hasn't one a title in 14 years (shared), or outright in 24 years. So I am not sure this analysis holds up.
  9. re:Turandot Highly dramatized Chinese characters in a Western opera does not constitute a connection to China.
  10. Two things mainly, in my opinion: 1) Kevlar heads 2) Changes in percussion writing style, which was partially due to #1. In short. Due to the physics of having a drum head generate a much larger rebound from a stick striking it, it is physically impossible to generate the same volume from the same impact energy. The more energy that goes into rebounding the stick, the less that can be used to generate acoustic sound. This is why snare drummers now have to 'monkey drum' in order to get a louder volume out of the drums - ie, rim-shots, etc.
  11. You've never heard of something called the "Ohio State/Michigan Rivalry"?.
  12. Assumuing the following: 1) A caption winner will be in the top 8 2) There are 5 captions, each scored in the range of 0-20. 3) Actual caption values for the top 8 are in the range of 18.0 to 20.0 3) Captions are scored in tenths. I ran a simulation of 10,000 finals, randomly assigning a number from 18.0 to 20.0 to each of the 5 captions for 8 finalists. (The simulation ignores 'years' where there is an outright tie for 1st and 2nd, due to the fact that in the event of a tie, the winner is determined by ordinals - meaning that the winner had to have won atleast 1 caption.) A finals winner has no outright captions about 9% of the time. (Added: The average margin of victory for a no caption winner is 0.5. For a winner with atleast 1 caption, 0.8.) For those sufficiently curious, here is the code (in Smalltalk) that does the simulation: yearlyResults:=OrderedCollection new. rnd:=Random standard. rnd seed:Time now seconds. numGroups:=8. numCaptions:=5. scoreCalculator:=[ ((((rnd next * 2) + 18) *10) rounded / 10) asFixedPoint:1 ]. 10000 timesRepeat:[ | results | results:=SortedCollection sortBlock:[ :a :b | (a at:1) > (b at:1) ]. 1 to:numGroups do:[ :group | | captionResults sum | captionResults:=Array new:numCaptions + 1. sum:=0. 1 to:numCaptions do:[ :caption | captionResults at:caption+1 put:scoreCalculator value. sum:=sum+(captionResults at:caption+1). ]. captionResults at:1 put:sum. results add:captionResults. ]. yearlyResults add:results. ]. yearlyResults:=yearlyResults reject:[ :result | result first first = result second first ]. yearsNoCaption:=OrderedCollection new. numWinnerNoCaptions:=0. yearlyResults do:[ :result | | winner captionsWon | winner:=result at:1. captionsWon:=0. 2 to:numCaptions+1 do:[ :caption | | highestCaptionScore | highestCaptionScore:=winner at:caption. 2 to:result size do:[ :otherIndex | | other | other:=result at:otherIndex. (other at:caption) > highestCaptionScore ifTrue:[ highestCaptionScore:=other at:caption ]. ]. (winner at:caption) = highestCaptionScore ifTrue:[ captionsWon:=captionsWon+1 ]. ]. captionsWon = 0 ifTrue:[ numWinnerNoCaptions:=numWinnerNoCaptions+1. yearsNoCaption add:result ]. ].
  13. How would you charge admission to enter an area that you do not own?
  14. Is there a difference between no competitive disadvantage, and a competitive disadvantage that does not manifest itself?
  15. With multiple VFW, AL, and DCI titles between them, the case for them having being at a competitive disadvantage is weak at best. The truth is that purposely excluding males would lead to a competitive disadvantage.
  16. I'll tell you, but only after you answer one question. How are you with a little barbecue sauce?
  17. I think only 2008 was the true upset. Phantom had not beaten BD all year. In fact, they had not beaten them since 2006. Also, Phantom came in ranked 4th, if you recall, and climbed one spot each night. Truly amazing. In 1983 the upset was semi-finals, SCV over Cadets. Cadets had been undefeated until semi-finals, if I recall. SCV just had a monster performance, which they could not repeat in finals.
  18. Through the start of this season - the 41st - there have been a total of 8 different corps to win a championship. That means an average of 1 new champion every 5 seasons. Looking at the 4 complete 10-year periods of DCI: 72-81 had 4 new champions (technically, really 3 - because someone had to win the first one). 82-91 had 2 new champions. 92-01 had 2 new champions 02-11 had none. And this year there is a very good possibility that another (Crown) will be added to that list, which would b 9 champions in 41 seasons. So 02-11 is the unusual case, not the norm. If you look at the 4 top title winning corps: Blue Devils -- 14 titles in 38 seasons as a finalist, with a 7-season gap (1987-1993) of none. Cadets -- 10 titles in 34 seasons as a finalist, with a 5-season gap (2006-2010) of none. Cavaliers -- 7 titles in 38 years as a finalist, with a 5-season gap (2007-2011) of none. SCV -- 6 titles in 40 seasons as a finalist, with a 12-season gap (00-11) of none. (The other 2 multiple-title corps - Madison and Phantom, I don't consider in this category, and SCV is arguably no longer in it competitively). Each has a significant gap of no title, lasting at least 5 years. (I don't count the years between the first year as a finalist and first title as a 'gap'). So even the 'big 3' corps can have long runs of no titles. All in all, this looks more competitive than you might think.
  19. Not sure about digital recording media today. I think back in the 70's there was an attempt to have judges use 8-tracks in lieu of cassette recorders. This may only have been in the DCI South circuit though. I think the plan fell thru when it was determined that when you are in the south, actually obtaining an available 8-track player/recorder not previously committed to endlessly looping on Lynyrd Skynyrd's Second Helping was actually impossible.
  20. You forgot to mention that when the Cadets actually got to perform their 1996 show at the closing ceremonies, they got precisely 6 seconds of on-camera time.
  21. This sound like employing phasing as a GE device. I don't think this would sound very nice to the audience.
  22. You wish to see it as a chart. I wish to see it as a giant game of "Twister".
