What makes DCI of today musically inaccesible?
SynthLine09 replied to WOOHOO's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
From a sheerly musical content standpoint, i simply could not wrap my head around the Blue Devils show. There was just too much going on, and I could hardly ever find a melody or tonal center. It was difficult for me to listen to. Thats not to say the performance wasn't great SCV's bartok was nice if you like Bartok. However I find Bartok is also very difficult to listen to. There are exceptions, but its not generally material I would use for an entire drum corps show. Its not powerful/exciting enough in my opinion, at least not in its original form. And I'd say it stayed pretty true to the original until the last minute and a half, which was very exciting stuff! Thats all I can think of at the moment, though there is more I may chime in with later -

Gave the DCI article a read. Nowhere did I see "Drum corps is no longer going to be a great life changing experience for kids." Therefore, I am not too concerned with any of this -

Show ideas you'd want to see next year
SynthLine09 replied to FaustianMachine's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I really enjoyed Phantoms very conceptual driven show...beautiful music as well. I'd love to see a similar idea from them next year with completely different music. Maybe something a little darker? I think the Blue Stars should stick with their darker/more mature show concepts as well. Man that show worked well for them Blue Knights...more of the same! -

Loudest Single Chord of 2010
SynthLine09 replied to Hrothgar15's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Didn't really get a chance to break out my decibel meter this year unfortunately....but from what I remember I'd have to say crowns opening and closing statements were pretty ear shattering. The Blue Stars also had that one gigantic sustain at the end of their opener...not sure how it faired in actual volume but certainly an impressive moment from the hornline. Surely someone else had one at some show -
From what I'm hearing there is far too much bass in a lot of the recordings. However, I think most of this falls on the corps. The key to a good recording starts at the source
