The Cavaliers 2011 Show
TheClutch replied to Hook'emCavies's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Everyone is good at playing and marching. And then people get bored So now it is who can play and march the best while communicating things to entertain an audience. Just like the reasons orchestras are going bankrupt is that people are bored with the classical music. Now, the amount of people who study music is lower because people can no longer listen to music without visual. (movies, music videos, drum corps!) Drum corps is a modulation from the old entertainment of classical playing mixed with military styles. Let it modulate to fit the wants of the new generations so it can be great. Entertain me, Cavaliers. :) -
The Cavaliers 2011 Show
TheClutch replied to Hook'emCavies's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
The top 8 corps are the top 8 because they do the best of making their theme come alive/more interesting. If you only like marching and playing, watch your semi finals dvd. The primary difference between marching top 8 and bottom 8 (for me, having marched both) was that while I was in the bottom corps, I did a LOT of marching and playing, whereas in the top corps, I had SO MUCH more to do for most the moves. -

Im XtraordinarilY MAD (world) that they didn't tease us a bit more. I'm impatient! Hope they do spectacular things... Maybe I'll go relinquish this anger by climbing a mountain, fighting a samurai, or maybe just listening to some good ole billy joel -
I would think doing laundry in the morning is better. Because night rehearsals are less hot, yeah? We would do guard and percussion during the first block, horns in the day block, and everyone back for the night rehearsal.

Corps marching technique/style
TheClutch replied to JimF-LowBari's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
The most important thing in teaching any technique is specificity. Where are you on count 1? the e? the and? the a? Initiation? Preps? How many inches is the shoe from the ground on the and? What portions of foot are used going backwards. How should they feel. What muscles are used on count 1....the e? and? a? Which musled stay relaxed? What is the upper body doing through all of this? etc. -

Colleges that could make great Drum Corps
TheClutch replied to wackywords's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
The summarized story Spirit didn't come from JSU. JSU helped Spirit of Atlanta after they fell into debt (for many reasons). (2000-07) JSU no longer wanted they're name tied with Spirit was afloat again for legal reasons. Spirit from JSU became Spirit Drum Corps from Jacksonville, AL. (08-09) Spirit moved to be Spirit Drum Corps from Atlanta, GA (2010) Now it is Spirit of Atlanta again (2011) hopefully they bring it like the old Spirit of Atlanta always did. -

your best bet would be emailing some corps staff (pitt staff? corps director? design team?) in late august and september letting them know that youre interested. They dont know if they will need a bass player until the show design is to a certain point, but you showing your interest can definitely put the thought in their head.

If 2010 Finals was one week later....
TheClutch replied to TheClutch's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I think bluestars show was more entertaining than scvs. What about the 11th-14th places? Cavaliers did lose a tenor player around the allentown time. That means the tenors learned a new show in a week. -
Would the results have changed?

College Bands Louder? What?!?!
TheClutch replied to SCVsop08's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
recordings dont do justice. For example. The crown mmx tuning sequence video had a really bad mic (from that distance), so the sound quality distorted (thus sounding louder) Older recordings have worse technology...thus distortion....==sounding louder.. need an example?...record something on your old flip phone and play it....the sound will be really distorted but will sound as if it's really loud. -

How do you guys think the arranger and staff did compared to previous years? I know people used to always complain about volume.. was this fixed? Do you prefer the new or old? Where do you predict them going in 2011? Just haven't heard or seen much about the topic :)

"Vote For The Worst" in the TOC Shows?
TheClutch replied to NYCFan's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I honestly think that DCI crowds are not that educated in the activity. The average Joe will have his favorite show. It may or not be the same as everyone else's. If you get your kicks out of trying to mess up a new idea, go ahead, but I would prefer if you just didn't go to a show. My brother (who has never been to a show. Only seen high school bands) went to the Atlanta regional and said he didn't know if he would be able to take the torture all day. From the time PR took the field to the time BD left it, he was captured and amazed. Is he a slotter? Average Joe. Thats his nonbiased opinion. -
Hey are there any good books written by band directors (or corps leaders.....which im sure are band directors as well...) about marching band/corps?
