  1. Frankly don't care for the ending either...
  2. The book for BD is really starting to grow on me. But those poles still do absolutely nothing for me.
  3. Unfortunately won't be there (kinda living in Arizona), but this will be a friend of mine's first live drum corps show, so here's hoping it will be a blast for her!
  4. I know there have been ties for champions in the past and even in lower places (such as 5th place in 2002), but I'm curious as to what happens if two corps tie for 12th in the Semifinals. Do 13 corps go to finals? Is there a hierarchy of tiebreakers to ensure only 12 corps? Has this ever happened before?
  5. I read somewhere that members of the Ambassador program were receiving free Live subscriptions (at least until they expire this month). So if you're a part of that, it might have something to do with it.
  6. Happy 40th anniversary to DCI, and to the Anaheim Kingsmen, for the anniversary of their championship.
  7. I liked the full corps chant in the Mandarins show. I also loved "William Tell" in Surf's show. Oh, and the "sacrifice" and drum feature in Academy's show. Pacific Crest's "True Colors."

  9. If I can find a ride to my parents' in Phoenix, I'll be at AMC Desert Ridge 18. Usually pretty decent crowds.
  10. Totally! Well...besides the whole, you know, original corps folding mid-tour . But this would definitely be a ray of sunshine on a very dark day for that member.
  11. Ah yes, I hadn't thought of that, I suppose that would make it a bit harder to do some of the more complex formations with no guides. And ouch, zeroing out sounds rough. For those of you in this thread that did indeed judge shows, what were some of the lowest scores you gave out or saw given to the corps? Either in your caption or just overall? With the more modern build-up system, I haven't seen many scores lower than the mid 30s, and even then it's rare.
  12. Ah, my mistake, I suppose I should have clarified; I didn't necessarily mean that Star's '93 show was the best show ever, or even Star's best show. But I think it is safe to say that that particular show was definitely talked about, and like you said, still is today. I'm just curious as to whether or not this year's Blue Devils show would have left a similar impact on the activity's community as a whole, regardless of how popular it was.
  13. How do you think it would be perceived? I bring this up because I was thinking of Star of Indiana's '93 show. It received its fair share of mixed reviews, but it is arguably one of the most famous programs of all time. It was a completely different, avant garde piece that challenged the traditional form of drum corps. Blue Devils have been getting quite conflicting reviews this season, some loving the artistic aspect and avant garde nature, others writing it off as boring or unimpressive or at this point, just old hat. So if the Blue Devils did put on Cabaret Voltaire in the early '90s, would it have the same effect as Star did?
  14. Wow, thanks a lot for the detailed answers! I can see the activity we have now is a LOT different compared to back then...couple follow-ups though: Were the criteria and expectations of the corps similar in DCI to the other organizations like the AL and VFW? Did they need different things depending on the show sponsors, or was it all pretty similar? Considering the ticks, were there different levels of penalties, or all one tenth? Like was a flag that was not spun in time the same as a dropped rifle (which I heard had to be then given to you by a judge)? Did drill have to be symmetric? Or was that mainly because of tradition/the norm? I'm sorry if this feels like a Spanish Inquisition, I'm just genuinely curious. You guys are a great help!
  15. Yeah, that's how I have always known it. But I heard they are purposefully using that pronunciation because that was how Puccini's daughter said it.
  16. So I didn't get into drum corps until 2007, and I really only watched corps from the '90s and '00s for the longest time. Recently I've been watching the performances of corps from the '70s on the Fan Network (and loving them) and given that I was nowhere near alive in that era, I don't really know what the judging structure was like in the early DCI days (or even before with AL and VFW). I figured you guys here would know the most about it, so perhaps you can explain it to me. I do know that the captions were much different (GE, M+M, Bugles, etc.) but I really don't know what the judges were looking for. Thanks a lot!
  17. Surf linked to a video of their performance on the DCI website.
  18. We all have them. What are those compositions that you think would be pretty effective or just plain cool in a drum corps setting? Anything from classical or choral compositions to modern tunes. A couple that come to my mind are: Robert Spittal's "Pacem: A Hymn for Peace." This particular arrangement is for a brass choir. It's got some great lyrical stuff and is rather pretty. Rachmaninov's "Ave Maria" from his Vespers. Here's and here is a . Beautiful, with an amazing climax. Those are just the ones that are off the top of my head. But what are some of yours?
  19. I'm not sure if this has already been posted, but I just came across this and don't feel like searching through the catacombs of this thread.
  20. Haha, snough9 is myself. I'm so happy my work is recognized :) + vote for you sir.
  21. 2007, freshman year at band camp. My snare drummer friend showed me this video of some band that he was a diehard fan of on his iPod (the video being Cavilers '06). I thought it was cool, but didn't think too much of it. Later that week my band went on a field trip to DCI Phoenix (how I wish that was still around), I saw The Cavaliers on the roster and I asked my friend what school that band was from. He simply chuckled and explained what "drum corps" was, just as Pioneer came onto the field. Needless to say, I've been a fan ever since, even more than my friend ;)
  22. Oh my, that's quite a bit, haha, thank you. I've seen a good number of those already, but they're certainly worth rewatching. I must commend SCV ('99) on their take of Barber's Symphonies (he seems to be a composer utilized quite a bit in very different capacities, like '93 Star and '00 SCV), and of course, Blue Shades. Some neat drill work too.
