Actually a lot of jazz drummers still play traditional behind their bands and most big band drummers still play traditional too.

in 1986 and in 1987 if you watch the video closely you can figure out how the magic tricks were done that year. as for 1988 and 1989 i never really got a good look at the trick up front to tell, but I'm assuming it was similar to the 1987 appearing girl trick.

Actually most lines where playing traditional in the 80's it was the seventies when most corps switched from matched to traditional.

Favorite Street Beat
bluecoats88 replied to KeithHall's topic in Historical Junior Corps Discussions
Someone mentioned the Cavies bass beat, but you can't forget 'boogie down' which they used in the 80's I remember Sky in mid 80's when their basses played the 'green acres' theme song. "spider' from suncoast is always a winner. I liked phantom's streetbeats in the mid to late 80's always very hard to march to. I remember in 1989 or 90 when my nephew marched with Glassmen their Tenors played the Mario Brothers theme, it was kinda cool. -
yep I'm here and yes we did carry those big old heavy squaring off ludwigs. crappy drums

Well except for the massive phasing in the hornline in the opening statement, but yeah Vanguard had a great show in 87. -

Blue Devils 1988 closer
bluecoats88 replied to crfrey71's topic in Historical Junior Corps Discussions
they had the tag all season long. And I believe it was inspired by the tag from the original of their opener "happy Days" by Barbra Streisand in which she does a tag ending much in the same vein as what the devils did at the end of their show. -
you could ask who finished second in drums in 1980 and how close they were to the 1st place drum score.

Heres Something a Little Different....
bluecoats88 replied to Walter's topic in Historical Junior Corps Discussions
Something like that happened to us at our first show in 1984 when we came back to the field after a year off. Our DM forgot to give the horns up before he started the show. the drum line started the show and played like a measure and noticed the hornline wasn't playing so we just repeated the first measure again and the horn line came in. It was a pretty good recovery for a very young corps. after that show the staff took out all horns up commands and had the brass bring up their horns during the countoff like the drumline brings out their sticks. Solved the problem. -

bluecoats88 replied to Kamarag's topic in Historical Junior Corps Discussions
You're right, I was stupidly thinking the dm's were lined up the same as their corps and didn't notice that Star and crossmen's DM's ewere swapped. And the picture was not all that clear on my screen so the star dm's top just looked white. -

Second from the right is crossmen, you can't see the corps all the way to the right, and by the drum major uni (farthest right) i don't think it's star. -
