  1. So, is "That is what he said" going to be the 2014 version of "This, I Believe!" ? Also: This I Believe was SEVEN years ago? ####, I am getting old.
  2. I hate to say it, but this "encore" piece has been the most entertaining (for me) so far. Also the best use of the stage. Alas, it IS only June, and one thing I have learned is to never hate too much on a Cadets show in June, because I just might love it come August. (This has happened many times)
  3. I don't think so, I thought that someone (can't remember who) either had mismatched size or simply no gaunlet on one hand... recently. Maybe Madison?
  4. Apropos of nothing, a nice anecdote: This morning I am on my morning train to Stamford. After the podcast I am listening to ends, I queue up Crown 2013 for the remainder of the ride. As I am getting off the train, I spot a young man in a Carolina Crown hat (not a common occurrence way up here in CT) and I tell him "nice hat", to which he smiles. Then I show him my Kindle, so he can see that I just happened to be listening to Crown at that moment. Pretty cool Carry on...
  5. That's a fair point, although I prefer the 83 version. In fact, I find the 93 version to be the most powerful, simply because they were hyping so much due to performing in a downpour.
  6. I would argue that the 81 version is not really better, but yeah, 82 and 83 immediately popped into my head.
  7. Yes. Yes it is. Really looking forward to this show.
  8. Just finished (got distracted by life...) Yeah, very cool. I like how he said that he will be viewing the production not really knowing how it's going to go. I think that the kids in BD are going to really enjoy the fact that they get the chance to , as he said "[create] an environment where young musicians can excel and perform a piece that does not exist anywhere else". I was lucky enough to do that, and while (at the time) Robert Smith was not on the level of Goodwin, it was pretty ###### cool to be able to perform something that no one else had ever played.
  9. BD posted an interview with Gordon Goodwin. Reading it now...
  10. Do you perhaps have a Cliff's Notes, or (for the kids) TL;DR version of this? Because, wow.
  11. And still do... 3 years later. (Not that it's old by now or anything...)
  12. 1. Hymn of Axiom 2. Movie Studio (I seriously can. not. wait. to see what BD does with this tune. It's right in their wheelhouse)
  13. Agreed. Although as an Old, I can't tell you how cool it was that he busted out Colonial Anthem for the "documentary" episode, I think in season 2. Made me happy, and I would love to see it on the field in some form... /threadjack
  14. A Battlestar show would have a lot of "tribal drumming"...
  15. Very welcome. In all honestly, I think that New York Fantasy is merely the fanfare at the beginning of the show, I don't know that it's actually a full chart. A New Beginning, however, certainly is a full tune (and one of my favorite BD closers, with my favorite "tag" ending).
  16. Exactly. Especially since their premier show is free on FN, MOST people here would see it on day one. Further, the vast majority of drum corps audiences neither post in nor read DCP Forums. I can guarantee you that at least half of nearly every crowd that sees Crown this year will be surprised by whatever they do.
  17. I think that they have played some Wayne Downey original charts in the past. I am thinking early 80s... ? Edit: Yeah, New York Fantasy (from 80 & 81) is listed as a Downey chart. Second Edit: A New Beginning, the 83 Closer is also a Downey joint.
  18. Atlanta may have been spectacular, but Allentown was sublime. I have never seen that many people in the stands for the first show of a big regional. They were there for Surf, and boy did Surf deliver. It was a special moment, one that I was lucky enough to view from field level (I was in Bridgemen Alumni that year and we were in the end zone watching the show). As far as my crow eating, the list is long and distinguished. From recent years, I was not a fan of Crown's use of narration in the ballad last year and railed against it. Now, I would say that the ballad is incomplete without the narration. I really, really didn't like BD 2012 upon the first few viewings, but by the end of the year it was my favorite show of 2012 (barely edging out Crown and Surf). I also hated Cadets in 2005. I mean hated, with the heat of a white-hot sun, mainly because of the drum speak and other vocals. That said, by the time I saw them perform live at Finals, I knew that I was seeing something truly special. I would also like to mention the "competitive blinders" that I had when I was marching back in the day. We would have some serious contempt for the corps that were beating us, especially the ones who were were close to points-wise. Because of that, there were several shows in the late 80s that I never really watched or enjoyed until years later.
  19. I am surprised that no one has yet pointed out that BD's closer (Movie Studio) is basically the Children's Chorus from Carmen. Not that I have any sort of beef, but I KNEW that I had heard that before...
