  2. So it's the beginning of July. We've got a pretty good idea what most of the corps are doing and what many of them have achieved so far. The sleek new uniforms have been revealed, crazy props dragged all over the field, and people are lining up the strollers in the front row in baby-throwing anticipation. I'm always lurking and reading, and from what I can tell, these are the 5 corps with the most hype right now. (In no particular order) Mandarins - These guys have been slowly building a contender the past few years. They've got a great show design and performers that are keeping up with the demand Can they push their way into the top 12 this year? Bluecoats - Their show design is top notch. They're using that zig-zaggy prop in crazy creative ways. You won't be able to buy a bowler hat anywhere in the US come August. Blue Devils - A brass book that's got more runs than after a trip to Taco Bell. The visual is a step behind, but they are already executing at a high level. No one ever counts out BD. SCV - A really complete show design with medalist potential. They're easily keeping up with BD's scores out on the west coast. The circles are the bomb and they use them SO well. Boston Crusaders - They've been running with the new staff hype for a while, and so far they've delivered. Great music and high visual demand. How far up can they go? What do you think? Did I miss someone? Is there a corps that we haven't seen yet that'll make even bigger waves? (OC, Cascades, Surf) This is just my opinion, feel free to debate and discuss.

  7. Hi everyone, as 2017 comes to an end, I thought that it would be nice to take some time to look back on the events that occurred in 2017. For starters, Blue Devils won their 18th title in 2017 and celebrated their 60th anniversary. Also in 2017, the Santa Clara Vanguard finished in 2nd and also celebrated their 50th anniversary as well. It was the first time Santa Clara Vanguard medaled since 2004. Also in 2017, the Cavaliers, the Boston Crusaders, the Madison Scouts, and the Mandarins made incredible jumps in 2017. The Cavaliers managed to slide into 4th place at DCI finals ahead of the Bluecoats, the Boston Crusaders finished in 6th place and beat the Cadets for the first time since 1980, the Madison Scouts made it back into the finals and finished in 12th place, and the Mandarins had their best season ever and finished in 13th place, their highest placement ever. They also finished the season with a 85.550, their highest score ever. Lastly, to conclude this list, we have Genesis and Music City. Genesis finished their very first competitive season in world class in 2017. They finished in 23th place and scored a 76.213, their highest score ever. And finally, the biggest headline for 2017 is Music City’s move to world class. Music City finished in 4th place in open class finals and finished in 24th place in world championship semi finals. In open class finals, Music City scored their highest score ever and scored a 76.763. In the world class semi finals, Music City scored a 74.275, their highest finish at DCI world class championships. Overall, 2017 was a great year and hopefully, we will have many great new story lines next year in 2018!
  8. After seeing the Blue Stars and Crossmen compete neck and neck with eachother all season this year, I began to wonder which corps might be in that same situation next season where they are right next to each other in terms of scoring and placement. My tight grouping predictions for next season are the following: Blue Devils v.s. Santa Clara Vanguard Santa Clara Vanguard v.s. Carolina Crown Bluecoats v.s. Cavailers Cadets v.s. Blue Knights Phantom Regiment v.s. Blue Knights Blue Stars v.s. Crossmen Madison Scouts v.s. Mandarins Troopers v.s. Colts Blue Devils B v.s. Vanguard Cadets Gold v.s. Golden Empire Seattle Cascades v.s. Jersey Surf Jersey Surf v.s. Pioneer Music City v.s. Genesis Battalion v.s. Columbians Impulse v.s. Shadow Shadow v.s. River City Rhythm Les Stentors v.s. Impulse Pacific Crest v.s. Oregon Crusaders Colts v.s. Academy Oregon Crusaders v.s. Spirit of Atlanta Again, these are just my predictions. What are your predictions? Do any of your predictions match any of mine? Do you agree or disagree with my predictions? Please comment in this thread and we will find out!
  9. Hi everyone, Welcome to the third edition of my match up series. In this edition, we will be looking at the Madison Scouts and the Mandarins. Looking back at the 2017 season, both corps accomplished many great things. The Madison Scouts pulled forward and made a return to finals after placing 13th at the 2016 DCI World Championships. They finished 12th in 2017 and changed their look for the first time since their founding by breaking away from the corps historical look. For the Mandarins, they had a successful season and finished 13th at the 2017 DCI World Championships. Throughout the 2017 season, the Madison Scouts and the Mandarins banged heads with each other and the competition got so intense that at almost every other competition, the corps would place right next to each other. There were some points in the season where the scouts would finish ahead of the mandarins at one competition and then at the very next competition, the mandarins would finish ahead of the Scouts. From all of this, it is very clear that the two corps are going to be battling it out again next season. Now, in the poll that is attached, please vote for who you think will score and finish higher!
  10. Let's hit the west coast this week and discuss a corps coming off their most successful year: the Mandarins. What are your top 1-5 all time Mandarin shows? (Optional) What are your 1-3 least favorites from them? You can go into as much or little detail as you like but please please try to keep things positive. For a quick recap in case you missed it and/or want to add your contributions: Week 1- Cavies- 2006 the Machine is the favorite and 2012 15 min of fame is the least favorite. Week 2- Jersey Surf- 2012 Bridgemania favorite Week 3- Blue Knights-1994 Trittico for bras band favorite. least 2001Blue Toons Week 4- Spirit of Atlanta- 1980 favorite Week 5- Carolina Crown- Favorite: 2015 Inferno; Least Favorite: 2017 ...It is
  11. Time zone = Mountain 4 p.m. Box Office Opens 7:30 p.m. Welcome & National Anthem 7:40 p.m. Seattle Cascades 7:57 p.m. Oregon Crusaders 8:14 p.m. Mandarins 8:31 p.m. Bluecoats 8:48 p.m. Troopers Bloo brings "Jagged Edge" out west on a pilgrimage to one of DCI's founding sites. They brought "Kinetic Noise" to Casper in 2015. You won't find a more perfect venue to encounter Bloo, or any drum corps, than Natrona County HS stadium. There is no running track encircling the performance field. The Western sky is high, bright and clear; the evening air is light and cool. The performances are up-close and in your face, the way drum corps should be. Last year, fans got an eye/earful of Cavaliers on this same field. In 2013, Crown brought their championship show to NCHS. No one, anywhere, got a better seat to encounter the brass of E=mc2 than they did in Casper. Bloo has a good shot to win this one ; the interesting matchup will be between Troop and Mandarins, their first direct contact of the season. The next night, July 15 in Denver, it's three of the Blues -- Coats, Devils and Knights -- on the same field for the first time this year. Should be a great weekend of drum corps. Worth the trip to Casper.
  12. Yesterday, the Mandarins scored 80.7 and moved into 15th place (I know placements don't mean much of anything, but it is still noteworthy)! This is the highest score they have ever received in World Class (or Division 1)! I think this corps gets overlooked far too often. They are in amazing place organizationally & financially, have a wonderful history, and have marched a full corps the past two years. They look and sound great this year. I am very excited for their future!
  13. This past Saturday (June 17), I went to the Sacramento Mandarins' Family Day show. I was very excited by what I saw. Over the past few years, Mandarins have continued to do better and better each year. I fee like they made a sizable jump in size and quality about 3-4 years ago and the Mandarins of today are on another level than a few years ago. Since joining Division 1/World Class, I feel they are often overlooked (Their 2013 show was OUTSTANDING). I think this will be the year they make a jump in scores and placements. I think they will continue to turn some heads. I believe they will be on the DCI cinemacast this year, and have an outside chance (depending how the cards fall) of making finals. Key Take-Aways: -Mandarins are marching a full corps (150 members) -Show theme is "Inside The Ink" which (this is my take, I have not seen a formal description) explores Rorschach tests and how what you see might not be what others see. -All sections are STRONG. Hornline is HOT (go to their Facebook page and watch a warm-up they posted - dang!), percussion sounds great, and guard is REALLY strong. I think that something great about this show is that it is written just right - meaning, that while challenging, every section can be successful at a high level and will be improving at every show throughout the summer. Visual is the weakest as of now and will benefit immensely through repeated practice and shows. -A special shout out to the guard, who is, by far the best guard the Mandarins has ever fielded. A great deal of equipment work. -My favorite part of the show is the Sound of Silence. VERY effective! Best of luck to them for a successful, safe, and fun summer! If you have a chance to see them, definitely do - such a great corps!
  14. This may be a short thread. As of a few minutes ago, I'm getting reports from the area it's raining pretty bad. We'll see and hope for the best. World Class Phantom Regiment - 9:02 Madison Scouts - 8:45 Mandarins - 8:28 INT - 7:58 Pacific Crest - 7:41 Open Class Genesis - 7:24 Shadow - 7:07 I assume all times are local -- CDT. [i wish fromthepressbox.com would make it a little easier to cut and paste from their site.]
  15. What an incredible show! Huge crowd, every Corps put forth a good show, and the weather cooled down in the evening. A perfect summer evening! Below are my thoughts. Feel free to ask questions. The talent level and performance of ALL corps is simply unreal - if anyone thinks Drum Corps is dying, well... you clearly aren't seeing what I am seeing. Wahoo! I didn't take notes, just writing from memory, so please forgive the lack of detail. Open Class Golden Empire - Bakersfield, CA -This Open Class corps is doing great things! I'm glad they are expanding their tour this year and hope they make it to championships next year. Blue Devils C - Concord, CA -Cute, Adorable. What else can you say? Blue Devils B - Concord, CA -Drumline is insane, rest of the show was good; I enjoyed it, but a lack of "wow moments" for me. Feels like the show has limited room to grow Vanguard Cadets - Santa Clara, CA -Great show! I had them slightly ahead of BDB tonight (just checked the scores, I was right!) I think this show has a lot of room to grow World Class Corps Mandarins - Sacramento, CA -They have been on a rise the past few years and continue that trend again this year. They have never looked or sounded this good, this early ever. A very special shout-out to the guard who is MILES ahead of previous years. The corps moves a lot this year which is an improvement from last year. I really wish they would stop using original music, which it is good, I feel like using relatable music might be the hook that pushes them up a few slots. I think they were better than Pacific Crest. It will be interesting to see where this show goes this year. The Academy - Tempe, AZ -Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night. The show connects so well with the audience, I believe it will be a fan favorite all season. Not only is the show entertaining, it looks beautiful and sounds beautiful. Unchained Melody was one of the most beautiful moments of the entire night. Huge crowd reaction! Call me crazy, but I think this show might be a dark horse to make finals. Pacific Crest - Diamond Bar, CA In the past, I feel like PC's show design has held this corps back - this year, I think it is much improved. Their show is called UNION and is about how the railroad connected America. I liked it, but I don't think there is enough there to propel the corps forward this year. Madison Scouts - Madison, WI Judas! This show had a,lot of power. Madison is starting very strong this year. Some good moments, especially when the crowd gets into the familiar music from Jesus Christ Superstar. Emotional show. Big step up this year for Madison. Very strong guard! Blue Devils - Concord, CA -The other surprise of the night (for me!) was that I enjoyed BD's show! They move A LOT. The guard spins A LOT. So much talent in this corps, especially the guard and drumline. I don't mean this as any kind of a knock, but I don't know if this show has the potential to win a championship. I feel like it's missing something to make it truly special. I fell like Bluecoats and Crown will be battling with BD all season. Santa Clara Vanguard - Santa Clara, CA -I call this show Elegant Nature. Very beautiful show. I know nothing about pit, but WOW - the their feature beginning of the show is so pretty. The hornline is FANTASTIC. So beautiful. I think this show was so enjoyable to watch. Not that they went anywhere, but I feel like SCV is back! Blue Knights - Denver, CO -I love glitter, so therefore I liked this show :) They sounded beautiful. I don't want to sound crazy, but I think they might have one of the strongest horn lines in DCI. The guard was also great and their multi-colored flags were so pretty. Some of the vocal tracks seemed a little disjointed, but perhaps it will all make sense once the full show is on the field.Their show wasn't finished, so it was hard to get a firm feel for it, but wow - what a great show!
  16. Kudos to the Sacramento Mandarins who helped the FREE Players Drum Corps move their equipment onto the field for their performance at DCI East in Allentown. Despite tight scores/rankings, highly competive seasons, and face-paced schedules, drum corps' MMs and staff continually go out of their way to help and support other drum corps organizations. What stories do you remember about being there for other corps or other corps being there for you? https://www.facebook.com/drumcorpsinternational/posts/10153524081974172
  17. Lots of DCI fans have really enjoyed the Sacramento Mandarins in 2015. Some see a bright future for the corps, possibly contending for a finalist spot in the next few years. How have you enjoyed the Mandarins this year? Field Pass Podcast: Mandarins have 'The Edge' in 2015 Link to Field Pass: https://soundcloud.com/drum-corps-international/20150731-fieldpass
  18. A couple of tight showdowns coming to DCI Arkansas (Little Rock). 1/10th separated Crossmen and Blue Stars and 5/100th separated OC and Mandarins in the previous evening at Broken Arrow, OK. Order of performance follows. 7:00 pm Mandarins 7:17 pm Jersey Surf 7:34 pm Pacific Crest 7:51 pm Oregon Crusaders 8:08 pm Colts 8:42 pm Crossmen 8:59 pm Blue Stars 9:16 pm Blue Knights 9:33 pm Santa Clara Vanguard
  19. Surprised not to see a thread yet for this show: DCI Dallas, presented by North Texas Festival of Drums Monday, July 20, 2015 -- 7:00 p.m. CDT Wildcat Ram Stadium Lake Highland High School 9449 Church Road Dallas, Texas 75238 Corps in performance order: Open Class Guardians Genesis World Class Mandarins Troopers Colts Crossmen Blue Stars Blue Knights Santa Clara Vanguard Blue Devils Source: DCI. If anyone has details on exact performance times or judges, by all means chime in. Most recent scores have BD at 87.300, SCV at 84.825, and BK at 81.900. It's pretty unlikely any of them will change positions, but what will their scores be? Will Stars catch Xmen? Will Colts catch Troop? How will Guardians do in their final performance this year? 20. Hello, my name is Alexis Macy. I have been contracted to march baritone with the Sacramento Mandarins for their 2015 season. This is a major dream come true for me because I have always wanted to march with a corps, but I never though I could because Im primarily a flute player. I had taught myself baritone (I have been playing for about 9 months now) and I never thought I wouldve been good enough. But now I have been contracted and I have the chance to live my dream. However, there are a lot of fees associated with drum corps. My tour fees plus round trip flight for April is $1600. I am in desperate need for help with this fee. My parents are doing all they can, but they also have financial committments, which means it is up to me to try to raise the funds. If you, or anyone you know could possibly help, I have a gofundme account with which you can donate. My gofundme is gofundme.com/mandarinsme. Any donation is greatly appreciated! Please, I really need help. It would be heartbreaking if I couldnt march my dream due to lack of finances. Thank you!
  21. -i-a (Sorry; I see the title got cut off.) How many people here know the original 1952 Guy Mitchell recording? "And I've just gotta get five or ten ..." tenths in several captions, is doubtless what some of these corps are thinking, although one corps who is not thinking that is... "The Commandant's Own" aka The U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, who will be appearing in exhibition, at: DCI Pittsburgh Presented by Three Rivers Baldwin High School Stadium 4653 Clairton Blvd. (PA Route 51) Pittsburgh, PA 15236 Sunday, August 3, 2014 -- 7:00 p.m. Corps in performance order: --Cascades --Mandarins --Pacific Crest --Colts --Blue Knights --Blue Stars --Boston Crusaders --Phantom Regiment More information here. And here's a news story about the show from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The National Weather Service says there is a 30% chance of showers Sunday night, with showtime temperature of about 70 degrees.
  22. Drums Along the Mohawk Rome Free Academy Stadium 500 Turin St. Rome, NY 13440 Wed., July 30 -- 7:00 p.m. (EDT) I didn't see a thread for this one. Here's the show site. These are the corps in show order: Cascades Mandarins Oregon Crusaders Pacific Crest Troopers Blue Knights Madison Scouts Boston Crusaders Preceded at 6:45 p.m. by a performance from the Saints Brigade all-age corps. NWS indicates rain passing through the area right now, so I'm guessing a delay is possible.
  23. Seven Open Class corps and one World Class corps tonight. Should have started at 6:00 p.m. PDT, with this line up: Incognito Golden Empire Blue Devils C City Sound Impulse Blue Devils B Vanguard Cadets Mandarins Plus some exhibition performances.
  24. I couldn't find a thread for tonight's "Corps at the Crest, Los Angeles" show in Glendora, which marks the first appearance by the Blue Devils in six days. DCI gives the line-up as: Watchmen Golden Empire Incognito City Sound Impulse Gold Mandarins Academy Blue Knights Crossmen Pacific Crest Blue Devils Santa Clara Vanguard With a start time of 5:30 p.m. PDT, which was three hours ago. Why the radio silence? Where are southern California's DCP participants?
