Gypsy Baron Posted August 22, 2007 Share Posted August 22, 2007 (edited) Beef on weck is actually a Buffalo thing; most places in Roch don't carry it. Many locals never heard of it. Yah, I know beef on weck is considered a "Buffalo thing" but I ate them regularly growing up in Batavia. I used to go by Getner's Grill across from Batavia Downs for them untill that place burned down years ago. Now I stop by the Polk-a-dot on Ellicott Street whenever I'm in Batavia. I know the Red Osher in Stafford has beef on weck but they weren't around back in my day, I don't believe. As I mentioned in my first post, there was a concession cart at Paetec Park last year that was selling beef on weck. I was looking forward to my second one late in the day and after standing in line for several minutes I come to find he's out of "weck"...without that it's just another roast beef sandwich that you can get anywhere. I found beef on weck here in San Francisco a few years ago while prowling down in the MArina District. Seems the bar/restaurant owner was from Buffalo and had the "weck" flown in special. Gypsy Baron Posted August 22, 2007 Share Posted August 22, 2007 I believe what u had was a "red Osier" beef sandwich and it uses "Red Osier"'s prime rib beef that they supply from their restaurant in Leroy. The chain of submarine shops in rochester called "Dibellas" sells the same formulated sandwich at all their shops in the rochester area and their is one located in Henrietta in the Jefferson Plaza across from southtown plaza on Jefferson Rd. I'm not sure what the name was on the concession cart there at Paetec Park, I just know they advertised "beef on weck" on their sign. Unfortunately the "weck" ran out before I could get my 2nd beef on weck the day/night of finals last year. I know about the Red Oshier in Stafford ( real close to Leroy ) but they were not my restaurant of choice back in my high school days for beef on weck. Now I stop by the Polk-a-dot restaurant in Batavia since I know they serve the sandwich. Thank's for the info on Dibellas" and the Henrietta location. I'll be sure to check it out! Concerning Pontillo's Pizza.....They have the best pies in Batavia and always stop there when passing thru BUT ALL of their franchises which they don't own anymore have TERRIBLE pies that don't come close to tasting the same for some reason. I don't know if they have different supp;liers for their dough and sauce, but the different pontillos shops around town are just nasty. Strange! Yes, the Batavia Pontillo's ( the original family owned pizza parlor ) is the one I'm familiar with. I've not tried any of the franchises so I can't comment on their pies. Unfortunately one of the original brothers that started the operation and ran it in Batavia passed away since I was there last year. Whenever I stopped by he would always ask about my parents who were also regular customers until moving away from Batavia in the 70's. Fortunately I will be spending a few days in Batavia after DCA weekend and will be able to down a pie or two before heading back to San Francisco. Also went to a place called Beale Street, a fairly short drive from the main downtown area (I don't remember how to get there because I wasn't driving)...... it's a very good BBQ place... sort of a less-touristy version of Dinosaur. BBQ last year, but I had just walked passed the building looking at the dam and the street peoples outhouse was directly behind it. I got grossed out when I got a good whiff of it.~gags~and left. They are at the intersection of South Ave and Gregory st. Afew minutes from downtown. :) Excellent food and they have a blues band every fri and sat night.
