Why we do this Alumni/Exhibition corps thing.....

Recommended Posts

Long story but simple question raised on another thread.....

Why do members of exhibition (aka Alumni) corps still do this DC thing? Or in cases like mine come back after a few years or decades.

To relive past glories?

To create new glories?

To be able to still play the horn and entertain people?

Cheap beer at the rehearsal site (had to throw in a smart ### choice ^0^ )

To get the #### out of the house!!!

Whatever else.....

For me it's playing music again, having a outlet couple of days a month and #1

.

.

.

Entertain people and help them forget their problems for a while... :)

I don't know about you guys, besides being a competitive corps, i also perform with a mini corps and an alumni corps. For me, it's more drum corps in my life, and it's different drum corps. Different people, different music, different mindset. PLus it keeps me playing during the off season of the competitive season.

All of the above....plus seeing friends from 47 years ago, and the Standing Ovations of the crowd.

It's a lot better than growing old and decaying in your house.

Why I like Drum Corps in my Middle Age.

.I get to meet new people and develope a new circle of like minded friends.

.I get to hopefully do better than I did in my Junior years or at least have more fun.

.I get to exercise my brain cells.

.A chance to perform again.

.It's a cool hobby.

We are going to compete when the time is right but for the time being we will be performing exhibition.

it's my bowling night,............................golf league,..................or something..................

LOL, my in-laws are major Bridge fanatics and used to take the kids to tournaments if they couldn't get a babysitter. Take 'em Hades, made the kids run scores (like a corps show). :P

My wife never gave me crap about starting corps again. It was "My parents do Bridge, you do Drum Corps".

Now her sister and bro-in-law ride motorcycles. My line now is "At least me doing corps is safer than me riding a Harley". B)

Why do we do this? Good question! Why do we put ourselves through this torture? There's no one reason for me, and I'm guessing that's true for many of us.

Just some of many reasons:

*I've always loved to play in a drumline and perform!

*It's a lifelong obsession -- first learned to play 46 years ago and still going!

*Preserving traditional, rudimental drum corps drumming for folks to see and hear.

*Long-ago friendships rekindled after 30 years.

*After hearing the old recordings for years, my family gets to see me perform on the field.

*I never tire of the roar of the crowds at shows. Let's face it, we're all hams at heart!

*Holding on to a bit of my youth! My wife says I look (and act) years younger in uniform!

*Marching and playing is good cardio exercise!

*After teaching kids to drum for 37+ years, it's a chance to play for my enjoyment -- and show

them how we've always done it as well.

Any of this sound familiar?
