Best First Place Show?

Recommended Posts

First off, I have to give major props to Star 1991 - Ottorino Respighi's Pines of Rome and the attendant show was magnificent!

Of course, by now you would expect that from me.

But ...

Phantom Regiment 2008 has got to be the perfect show at the perfect time. Any corps who could attempt Richard Strauss' Ein Heldenleben and wrap it within a theme that included a truly epic figure like Spartacus with music by Loris Tjeknavorian and Rene Dupere plus a visual presentation that was indeed heroic. That's my vote right there. And glad to do it!

This one is not as tough as some of the other placements. That said, there are some who deserve (extra) special recognition in my mind:

1975. Madison Scouts

1982. Blue Devils - these guys still do NOT get enough recognition on DCP for how awesome they were!

1984. Garfield Cadets

1996b. Phantom Regiment

1999b. Santa Clara Vanguard

2002. The Cavaliers

2007. Blue Devils

2008. Phantom Regiment

My clear winner - the 2008 Phantom Regiment! I AM SPARTACUS!

To be in the stands finals night and that Roaring,Thunderous crowd reaction to Phantom taking 1st was a true experience.

1983 Holy Name

HM to 1988 Scouts, 1989 and 1999 SCV

(also love 1978 SCV, although it would have

no chance of ever winning)
