RegimentContra94
What shows do you think have held up over the years and would be competitive today? Styles change, and things have gotten more complex visually and musically over the years but do you feel that a certain show would still work today? I'll wait and post mine later, as I don't want to influence anyone!
JamMan
A tough question for sure! The shows would have to have today's balance of performance, demand and execution, which isn't easy to come by in past shows. Also, I don't know how far back I should begin. I'll say the 90's and earlier. BD: '96, '99 Cadets: '93 Cavaliers: '95 Phantom: '96 SCV: '99 Star: '90, '91, '92, '

jwillis35
Obviously, there are plenty of shows that hold up over time. So I will add my 2 cents a bit differently. From a fan perspective, the shows that hold up the best are those that: a) entertain (duh) - think Madison in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Think Cadets 2009, Cavaliers 2004, Phantom 08, Bluecoats 2005 & 2007, and many, many more. b) have some element of intrigue, or a concept, that is polarizing, innovative, captivating, or ideas that inspire change - think Star 93 or Cadets 2005 for polarizing (among other things) - think Cavaliers visual breakthroughs beginning in the late 90s to early 2000s for innovative and captivating - think Bluecoats "Boxer" segment in 2008 - think Garfield 82 & 83 for innovative and inspiring - think Star 1990 - think Phantom 2008 (story telling in a different manner) - think SCV's company front from this past season. c) or shows that have super high levels of execution and demand - think Cadets 1997 - think Blue Devils 1988 - think Cavaliers 2002 - think Star 1991 Typically we tend to remember those shows that, for whatever reason, hit the "right" button when we viewed them. The right blend of elements often does this for us. For me, I didn't actually care for every element of Star's 1991 production, but boy do I remember that show. I was floored by the execution and demand every time I saw it live. Just an unreal experience. I don't always have to like the show to LOVE the corps. Odd, but true. Blue Devils this past year were incredible performers. I didn't care for every aspect of the show, but man will I remember just how well they marched their tootsies off. Good gosh, that was worth a view (or 2 or 3). The point is, we can remember demand, intrigue, polarizing concepts (chairs, voice, singing, etc.) and innovation as much as we remember the excitement of a corps giving us music we know and love in a manner that we like.
