It shouldn't just be "lots of corps have played Bernstein."

Why do you think Bernstein has been so popular in marching music? What is it about his music that has made it so popular in this activity?

Bernstein is great because just about every piece of music he wrote has qualities that are appealing to listeners for different reasons.

Or any of the other wonderful scores by the great Elmer (my personal favorite: To Kill A Mockingbird)

Those three or four tracks are my favorite Elmer Bernstein stuff by far.

How about the effects Bernstein's music has had on the music choices and arranging of other music? His widening of the harmonic language, intergration of extended (jazz) harmony into "classical" music, rhythmic complexity, wide range of styles in a single piece (ever heard the original recording of "Mass"?), intergration of theatrical elements into concert stage compositions, etc.? He was not always the first to do some of these things, but along with Aaron Copland, he made them AMERICAN! How has Bernstein's music effected other music that was then used in a drum corps setting?

We are still too close to his death, but someday he will be revered as the artist/composer/teacher/lecturerer he was, and not just as the guy who conducted a concert on a days notice. His carrer with the New York Philharmonic was a blazing sucess, and maybe some day orchestras in the United States can actually fufill that legacy by figuring out that great conductors CAN be born in the United States. Why does every orchestra in the US down to the Hooterville Symphony have to have a conductor born somewhere OTHER than in the US? The conductor of an orchestra near me can barely speak english. What kind of ambassador for music does that make him?

Sorry if I get a little crazy about the subject, but my parents met in Bernstein's conducting class at Tanglewood, he offered my Dad a job and gave him conducting lessons, and he even gave me a few conducting lessons.

Different angle - Did drum corps affect his compositional techniques? After he left Boston, did he ever go up to see the family and (during the visit) hear a corps? BAC was just starting up. Did he ever travel into Hyde Park to help the kids? Did the lack of valves take him to writing REALLY high trumpet parts? Have you ever seen the Trumpet 1 book of WSS?
