the biggest concern is, to some, new blood shows up, then doesnt stick, leaving the same names...until a plethora of new blood is there, Nick has some points that are very valid.

1998...Gmen..wow...new blood...havent been back since 1999

Boston 2000 to the top 5...and since...6th at best.

2001

I took a look at VFW's from 64-70... (snip cherry-picked stats)

Mike, you "take a look" at 1964-1970 VFW every time a discussion about stagnation comes up. And every time, someone points out how adding just one more year (1971) invalidates your contentions.

Is it stagnation, really? Yes it can get boring to see the same small group of names battling for the top spot every year, but they earn it. Until someone else can reach the pinnacle that those corps have created, we're likely going to see the same names over and over again. I have faith that it's going to happen, and what I really hope to see is a group of 4, 5, 6 or even more corps who are able to take the prize on that second Saturday in August any given year.

In the heyday (1946-1971) of the VFW and AL, there were 10 different champions:

St. Vinnies

HNC (Garfield)

Osmond

Sac

Cavies

Kilts

RA

Troopers

SCV

St. Lucy's

That's a new champion every 2-3 years.

DCI had 4 champions in the first 5 years, then only 4 more in the next 33.

Just some food for thought.

All corps didn't go to Nationals every year. Sometimes the geographic distance was too far and too expensive. This allowed some regional corps that didn't go in other years to go and win. And some corps went to AL one year and VFW another, depending on what they had going for sponsorship. It wasn't until the formation of DCI that all competitive corps went to the same championship every year.

That would just make it easier for a perennial contender to win. For examples, Cavaliers went to VFW every year from 1955 to 1970. If there was less competition for the reasons you state, then they would have won even more. Yet, there were 6 different VFW champions during that 16-year period.

DCI's record of 4 new champions, and 7 different champions overall from 1977 to 2009 still seems anomalous compared to VFW in the 50s and 60s.
