Will BD and SCV have any California shows

Recommended Posts

No shows after June? Bummer.

Indeed. From what ive seen, there really isnt much to complain about in the early season. This year 4 of the previous year's top 12 were out there. Not too bad. The main valid complaint is that the west coast never sees corps later.... and this really doesnt change that. All sending 2 corps west in the early season will do is depriving another area that only sees corps early on of corps.

No. They have paydays and show-hosting opportunities back in California, ample time to get there for two show weekends, and probably the usual string of DCI shows leading them across the Rockies to Denver on July 9.

how much money would they need to make on the 2 texas shows to turn a profit with the stadium rental, housing sites, and travel costs associated with 6-8 days of travel round trip?

West coast fans have long complained (rightfully so) that the west coast gets the short end of the stick. There are no late season shows on the west coast, and they generally only get to see the west coast corps, except sometimes when another corps will travel out there.

Quoted from the WSODC thread:

BD and SCV are part of the group that has requested these dates as show dates for the Greedy7 from DCI.

This means that BD is requesting to be 30 hours travel time from Concord on June 16, and 25 hours driving time from Concord on July 11.

SCV has requested to be 28 hours from Santa Clara on June 16, and 26 hours from Santa Clara on July 11.

Likely, this means that BD and SCV would have to leave California around June 12th, and they would be able to return to California on June 21st. Then, BD and SCV would need to leave for Nebraska around July 6. This leaves them 14 days on the west coast, but with significantly extra travel expenses.

Wouldn't it make more logistical sense for BD and SCV to hang out in the Texas/Nebraska area for those 2 weeks? Do BD and SCV think they will make up the extra travel costs at the Texas shows? Remember that SCV didn't have their closer on the field until the 2nd week of July this year. What product on they going to have on display in the middle of June?

Are BD and SCV planning to perform on the west coast in 2011?

amended question per Jeff Ream's response in post #2: Are BD and SCV requesting to not have any shows in California in 2011?

we should have family day and maybe DCI west. THe rest is likely speculation.

4 of the top 12 is pathetic. How would it be if all the other shows were attended so poorly? DCI West was so early, that SCV was not even close to done. Either last year or the year before, BD had not received rights to play the music yet. Basically, the west coast is not supported by DCI very well, and that is a perfectly supportable complaint.

How is 4 of the top 12 pathetic? A LOT of other areas dont even get that. During that period of time, the other 8 are typically split between east coast and midwest tours (and not all of them are at every show in those areas, obviously). As i said earlier, i dont argue the fact that it sucks for the west coast that they dont get any later season coverage, but short of moving finals back out there (please not the rose bowl again, that place sucked!), or having a really janky and expensive tour schedule, thats not really going to change very easily. Any corps that goes west takes away from a corps in the midwest and east, and there are a lot of shows that need covered that would be shorted by the west coast having more corps out there. Prior to the minneapolis show coming in this year, the last few years we'd had the tour swing through the plains states during week one of tour and never come back through again. No better than what CA got. If you think of the pre-regional part of the season as 3 'regions', west, east, and midwest, 4 finalists per region is an equal allocation.

Corps know for months what their shows are going to be. As much as I despise DCI, I will say it isn't their fault if SCV or anyone else doesn't have their show finished when they know they are going to be appearing at that show months in advance.

Not much different. During that entire period of time, there were only two shows with more than four (i.e. five) reigning finalists on the slate.

DCI West was so early, that SCV was not even close to done.

The other world-class corps were. Take your complaint up with SCV, then.

Either last year or the year before, BD had not received rights to play the music yet. Basically, the west coast is not supported by DCI very well, and that is a perfectly supportable complaint.

DCI is not responsible for making sure BD gets their music licensed on time.

I imagine nothing I say will satisfy you, though. Fact is, this is a touring activity with limited time and funding, and far fewer corps than yesteryear. Thus, tours are largely land-based, and world-class converges to single-location focus events by the third weekend of July. Generally speaking, drum corps fans living at the edges or corners of the map are out of luck.

Still not happy? Lobby DCI to hold finals in California in 2013. Join the Eastern drum corps fans lobbying for Foxboro, and the Southern fans lobbying for Orlando.

Or here's another option....grow some more top-12 Western corps. Support Academy, Pacific Crest, Mandarins....

I think BD has a plan to be in 2 places at one time. They get enough turnout at tryouts to field 2 complete corps, so do it. Field a BD West and a BD East. Each BD plays the same show. Do ALL the competitions, and combine your best talent for finals. Everyone is in the corps, everyone gets a ring.
