Jeff Ream
And how does that hit more fans than geographically well-placed shows in larger stadiums over a few days? Especially when you're talking about adding a huge additional expense to at least 15 of the 23 corps. As i said in my last post... to the 99% of fans (especially new initiates) that didnt march and havent been spoiled (read: those not on DCP) those june shows still meet the need. Alex, you have a market starved for late season drum corps, in a state that has a MASSIVE POPULATION, and a ton of drum corps fans. Not only that, you tie it to the end of the year, and give people a chance to travel to a city they've always wanted to see....you have a recipe for success dying to happen...that continues to not happen. really if you think about this, it's a genius idea DCI has tried once in almost 40 years. flip flop the regionals...imagine the Denver crowd if they get 23 corps....make a regional in Socal the week before Norcal finals with shows along the way...high attendance, and corps make money to offset the extra costs. it's a no brainer? And in a region that only gets early show and only ONCE has gotten close to finished products....compared to the East where a fan close to Allentown can see early AND late shows from several of the top dogs. ajwdad
The population factor doesnt matter as much when you're planning a tour to cover the maximum amount of fans at least once. You pop a show into a city, and you can cover a larger demand by having a larger stadium. 90% of fans (the kind that didnt march drum corps) will be #### impressed with shows whether they see them in june or august. You have 2 months to expose as wide of a geographic area as possible to the tour. The most efficient way to do this is to have a tour that covers wide areas, and then adjusts for levels of demand with larger or smaller stadiums. Alex, It is almost impossible to know where to start... Don't take this personally. Basically I disagree with most or all of your assumptions. And I reject the idea that Indy is a great place for finals. In fact, I think that by a lot of metrics, it is pretty poor. Lucas Oil may have its appeal, but come on, are you serious about Indy? Who vacations in Indy? Who goes there for business? The population factor doesnt matter as much when you're planning a tour to cover the maximum amount of fans at least once. That is pretty silly. Of course the population matters. So, fans are not directly associated with Drum Corps? First of all, that is mistaken. Second of all, if you are right, then we need to cover the most people, not the most territory. Where do you think the maximum amount of fans live? ". 90% of fans (the kind that didnt march drum corps) will be #### impressed with shows whether they see them in june or august. " Ok, the first part of the sentence may have merit, but the latter part is nonsense. Fans want to see a competition... And a world Championship contest will outdraw any small regional show that has about 1/3 of the top competitors. Why would ANYONE go to Indy? The place sucks. The weather is horrible. But, the super bowl will draw people in, the Indy 500 will draw as will DCI championships. Of course, if DCI only held a regional show in Indy. the attendance would not be that great. In fact, how about having 8 corps march. 3 of the top 12, and 2 all age corps, and 3 open class corps... Not a great attention getter is it? You have 2 months to expose as wide of a geographic area as possible to the tour. Who cares about geographic areas? I know, lets go to the largest state in the Union. Alaska. We can cover a HUGE geographic area and not attract a single large crowd. It is all about the population and the fan base. The most efficient way to do this is to have a tour that covers wide areas, and then adjusts for levels of demand with larger or smaller stadiums. First of all, this assumes that you want to cover land and not people. Second of all, the idea is to grow demand, and serve demand, not adjust to low demand. Almost every show that I attended in Ca (5 of them) were better attended than the wonderful semis or qtrs of Open Class. It is hard to take this seriously. but, I think that you may represent a lot of thinking within DCI. Hence, a lot of people here in the west, including the most populated state in the nation Ca, and likely more people in the 4th most populated state, Florida, get shafted by thinking like this. BTW, Indiana is the 16th most populous state. There are about 40M legal residents in CA, and almost 6.5M in Indiana. Do some math. But, DCI does cover Texas, the 2nd state. Think about it before responding emotionally. Edited August 25, 2010 by ajwdad

84BDsop
Youre simply not getting it. By covering the most land you cover the most people. Depends on the population....you'd cover a crapload more people going through SoCal than through all of Alaska.... You have to cover ground where people actually ARE. ajwdad
Youre simply not getting it. By covering the most land you cover the most people. Alex, this statement is patently false. Alaska is the largest state, and the least populated state. CA is the most populated state. Are you even thinking? Land does not equate to people. Please think before posting, this is getting tedious.

ajwdad
some advice you should take yourself. Nothing emotional about my post. And try to argue with facts and reasoning, as opposed to very flawed logic... Like covering land is the same as covering people...
