Jeff Ream
Well spoken and I agree. There's an ocean of difference between: "I prefer acoustic drum corps." and "This is no longer drum corps." whew, i'm on top of the ocean
Jeff Ream
There's nothing profound here. There have been people have been "pushing for change" from day 1. And there have been people objecting to every change as "THE END OF DRUMCORPS !!". Everyone wants to draw a line the sand and say "THIS is drumcorps", There *is* no line. It's a continuum of change. not all change is good
Jeff Ream
Careful, you may get Hrothgar14 upset! :P I agree with alot of what you say fsubone. But honestly, I think DCI can do an even better job of pleasing more people "some of the time". and I think this is what Cesario was brought on board to help figure out. I don't however, expect a quick fix. And I'm not saying that as a bad thing...it's a complex issue and will take time to sort out. What I constantly suggests here is that corps shouldn't feel obligated to use electronics. It's not that I think electronics are better or worse they are just another tool to use and I think judges and corps should see them as that. It would be nice to see plugged in and not plugged in corps compete with each other, in the hopes that corps can freely use G bugles or other instruments from the past as well as the modern ones. well, amplification is mentioned on at least one sheet. like blend and balance, clarity, and all of the other buzzwords, if it's on the sheets, it's thought to be a need to be competitive. I honestly feel that if that happens drum corps will have an even wider variety and people who are philosophically against amped singing in drum corps won't mind that the Cadets are doing it if you have Madison Scouts rolling out the G bugles. In fact the contrast and variety might be extremely invited. Variety, Variety, Variety. i think at this stage G bugles are a pipe dream and you'll never see them again on the DCI competitive field. I'm a drummer, so I don't get too involved in that. But, I think we'll see far more electronic usage than less, and that's what I think will possibly create a lot of damage
Jeff Ream
Do you really believe that there is no point beyond which drum corps would no longer be drum corps? If everything is drum corps, nothing is. woodwinds. and we all know one person wants them in there badly

corpsband
Do you really believe that there is no point beyond which drum corps would no longer be drum corps? If everything is drum corps, nothing is. Not quite what I said. I was referring to people who insist that this change or that has fundamentally changed the activity such that it is no longer drum corps. I reject such claims. Those people are really just saying : my PREFERENCE is drum corps of XX era. They're just excessively dramatic in their presentation. Things evolve. Things change. I think that's part of the very nature of this activity. Ask members today if what they do is drum corps. The answer would be: yes!! End of story. corpsband
not all change is good The activity will plot it's own path just as it always has balancing tradition and innovation in a constant struggle. It will try to hold on to the best of what has passed and embrace the best of what is new all at the same time.
