blazek
A tech of mine had to march next to a hole at finals in 2000 because the kid got caught with marijuana after semi's. That kid was apparently sent home immediately.
MisterA
I'm pretty sure that it's true. By all accounts Dave Gibbs went ballistic. I'm just curious, if Gibbs saw him enter the field, why didn't he have him escorted off? I really hope the kid didn't get lucky enough to march anywhere the next year, if he wasn't an ageout. It is a shame when one young talented person shows that kind of lack of respect. I know alot of people have different gripes about different corps, different directors, and different shows, but to turn around and march after being sent away from the corps just blows my mind. MisterA
I just kind of checked out that Ram thread. It sounds like the guys in the line were happy that he snuck onto the field after warmups. Now I am looking at this from the perspective of a former staff member, as a volunteer, and as a parent. As a marching member, or former marching member, would you rather march with the hole, or would you have been happy that your friend ended up on the field for finals performance? corps8294
Here's the thread on RAMD. As I recall this turned out to be true. The kid was caught, booted from the corps and the bass line spent the day re-learning their show marching 4 basses. After the on-field warmup. the kid ran out on to the field and marched his show anyway. I remember seeing this happen. I thought it was some dude that was late, for some reason, and was just catching up with the corps. A few years later, I worked with a guy that marched in that line and he told me what happened. That was a pretty bold stunt for that kid to pull after getting kicked out of the corps for "what he did."
bdon15
Wouldn't it have messed up the (surviving) four bass drummers who had already re-learned the parts, to have him back in the line? and what about the hole in the drill, they would have already filled in that hole and possibly put a shiny black oxford, size 10 up his... Jeff Ream
I think BD had some kind of incident Finals night in 2000 regarding a member in their drumline. I think it had something to do with one of their bass drummers. I remember the corps doing their on field warmup as bass 2 ran on the field at the end so they could march
fsubone
It's sadly very, very true. One of the bass drummers, 4 or 5, did get in trouble for drugs right before Finals week, and was "removed" from the corps, but allowed to travel still with them. At Finals, as far as I've heard, other members of the drumline took his uniform off of the truck for him, and another corps, (may have been BK, that rings in my memory) donated a drum for the night. The guy came onto the field, performed the show, then ran out of the tunnel once they were done performing. I believe that night, the hole in the ozone layer became a bit bigger just from the amount of steam and expletives coming out of Dave Gibbs. Again, all of this comes to me from stories from members who marched that year.

Penalty. IF you go back and look at BD 2000, it's a LONG show, so I think they were running up against the time limit anyway. So if they actually had to take the time to get the kid off of the field, and get everyone else reset, that could have easily pushed them over the time limit, and when they were that close to the title, it isn't something you'd want to risk. For sure march the hole. There's no way that you'd want someone who disgraced the corps that much with you on the Finals field, sharing that final moment performing the show. I'm sure things would have been different with the drum parts, but it's better than having someone like that on the field. It's like SCV '89, would any of the members want to have the over-age kids on the field at Finals after finding out they had been lying to the corps and director all summer?
