I think it should be broken up thusly. I'm a fierce advocate of transparency:

Audience Engagement:

Judging Prerequisite: PSYCHIC ability, or advanced training in parapsychology, or being able to run an applause-o-meter.

Visual Analysis:

Judging Prerequisite: Advanced degree in neuropsychology with emphasis on symmetry and figure-ground segregation

Visual Vocabulary:

Juding Prerequisite: at least 2 publications in the field of kinesiology, or at least 2 years of performing in Riverdance or Blue Man Group.

Music Analysis:

Judging Prerequisite: At least 2 publications in the Dutch Journal of Music Theory (Tijdschrift voor Muziektheorier), or at least 4000 verfied hours of listening to 21st century classical music.

Music Vocabulary:

Judging Prerequisite: advanced degree in musicology with emphasis on historical musicology, or publication of an orchestral work within the last 6 months, or passing a written and aural theory test as determined by DCI.

I think colorguard and percussion captions are fine as they are, personally.

lol. Love it! Great idea we can all have fun with. (Well, maybe not me since I have no sense of humor.)

Wouldn't this whole, complicated, unnecessarily-wasted year of boring drum corps be accomplished by DCI just releasing the sheets for public view?

releasing the sheets give DCPrs another thing to complain about.

The Entertainer of the Year Award.

Annually given to the corps voted on by Fans as the most entertaining corps of the year.

The trophy would look a bit like the Stanley Cup- or about the size of a Contra. It is presented on Finals night with all the other trophies, A Trophy is given in World, and in Open.

Voting is done through DCI.org, Drum Corps World and by DCI event balloting ( strategically placed at stadiums) at all DCI Regionals and select shows on Tour.

Voting ends after DCI Quarterfinals. No text votes. Old school paper balloting at stadiums or Internet voting only. This way of voting should bridge the generations.

The Winner is announced on Finals night.

If we have an Ott, a Sanfrod, and a Zingali- my vote would be to call this award "The Hoffmann" - for Open , and "The Jones", for World, For Bobby Hoffmann and Jim Jones respectively.

One Rule- corps cannot endorse, solicit, or encourage via the Internet or other advertising sources to get fans to vote for them. Corps members and staff can talk about it casually, but there cannot be campaigns on the lines of Chase Giving- that encourages fans and alumni of specific corps into thinking "Vote for Us". It must be organic or in other words-" Show us how you entertain us on the Field". In this manner, the encouragement or the responsibility of the individual is emphasized to vote, Not the corps fan base, Alumni, or bias thereof to vote.

The Entertainer of the Year Award is not the Spirit of Disney award - It is meant as a reward of Thank You from the fans, and by the Fans. The prestige of winning it could be seen as the equivalent of being Top 6 or World Champion. The Champion of Entettainment can use this title in all their advertisements, particularly in recruiting. Any corps can win it.

True, good point. Its the off season and choices were getting a bit thin around here.

For just one summer.

Using some of the same ability judging rules as are used today.

EVERY CORPS plays the exact same song.

Every corps is given a field dot sheet, music score, list of available instruments and exact visual rules.

Each corps tries to follow as much of these rules as they can with the number of members they have and the skills the members possess. Corps can pick their own unis and flags.

Every corps does the exact same show.....this is similar to figure skating compulsory figures, everyone does the same thing so it BECOMES obvious (eventually even to the novice drum corps fan) which corps is/are better.

We keep the top percussion, brass and guard awards, as there will be no dispute by the end of the season who won them.

At every show the fans will see and hear the same program - perhaps as many as 12 times.

Each week DCI adds just a bit more difficulty to the program objective.

The corps that can incorporate those changes into the program correctly gets more points than the other corps.

Screwing up a competency, screws up your score.

By the end of one very long and somewhat boring season, EVERY drum corps fan will have no excuse to not be able to be 'experts' in the judging system with full knowledge and understanding of what goes into the judging and how shows progress during the season.

At Finals, even the fans vocally vote for the proper 'winner'.

.....the next season, we completely scrap this plan and go back to the previous way of each corps picking their own show, music and progression of difficulty.

Fans will be MUCH HAPPIER because most of them now UNDERSTAND what the judging is all about. They will have higher expectations for all the corps they see, all the time.

The outbursts of homers will still be there, but true fans will be able to laugh at them while completely agreeing with the final show results...........

"Somewhat" boring? No, I think incredibly boring. Talk about driving fans away . . .

"But 11 is just painted on..."

"Yes, but 11 is more than 10, so it's louder"

Man, that was just on the other week on one of the lesser known cable stations.....
